Hitachi vcr problem in uk

Okay. I need some help from the VCR servicing community here. I have a Hitachi VT-M 740e VCR. I have sorted a couple of things on it, but my main problem is that on playback, through Scart (AV) it has vertical red and green bands on the picture. When you press STOP and it goes back to blue screen, it looks fine. I'd really love to get some idea as to what is wrong. If I can cure that, I'll have a nice little VCR.
