A rare bird! Maybe the last of its kind anywhere. Going along with John, I'd guess a CTC-11 clone.

ANYBODY ever seen a 16 RPM record ? I think they were used for those wild 'n' woolly car TTs of the '50s-but I've never seen one. I can only imagine how badly awful a car TT would be...But this TV/combo IS luscious...an' they're always a half-bazillion miles away...<sigh>

In the late 70's, I did see some 16 RPM records. They were voice-only, language-training records, 7" diameter. I do not remember how long the playing time was, but it could have been 15 minutes or more per side on a 7" record at 16 RPM.

I've seen some 16RPM records that were part of the curriculum used for language and reading teaching aids in elementary schools. Yea, the Highway Hi-Fi records were also 16RPM. I think they chose the slow RPM so as to help prevent the record from skipping a lot when going over bumps in the road.

As we all know, the 16 RPM speed never caught on with the general public, but it did end up being used for "talking books" for the blind. There was also an even slower 8 RPM speed sometimes used for these "talking books." There were special record players made especially for the blind that were issued by the government for this purpose. At least one of these I've seen had what appeared to be a 'stock' 3-speed rim-drive turntable (as I recall, I think I remember thinking it looked like a V-M), but instead of the usual 33-45-75 RPM motor shaft steps, it had speeds of 8-16-33 instead.

Oh, and if you play your Chipmunks records at 16 RPM, you can prove to yourself that it's really David Seville (Ross Bagdasarian) singing all the parts.

16 2/3rpm was the Speed for the Chrysler Highway Hi FI car record players. Nobody sold the records except Chrysler. The music choices was pretty slim. Maybe that is why they did not really sell well.

While the Chrysler units only played 16s, I think that at about the same time RCA came out with a car record player that used 45s, but I can't remember now where I read that.

i always thought 16 was a 10 inch.my first job was working at an antique store and the owner had a brunswick wind up,and a bunch of 78s and 16s,so me being young i put a 16 on the brunswick and yea it was pretty awful.capitol issued alot of stuff on 16(that was the only lable i remember on 16)and the titles were like "honkey tonk piano" ,"16 pianos 1 player",oded stuff, and then i got super confused when i saw a 10 inch 33 grrrrrrrrrrr.
