1980/1981 Zenith System 3

Having a terrible issue with screen flickering. Anyone have a 9-160-04 or something that would sub for it that they would like to sell me? Need help or I'll have to scrap it. Or if there's anyone in the NYC area might be up for paying for repair

The -04 can be replaced by the -06. All factory rebuilts
were -06's. There MAY be one cable that plugs into
the top of board not used. Just tie it off out of the way.

Have you resoldered the old one ?? Cold joints are common
on them. Also a 10mfd 415V cap on the right rear near
the FBT goes a lot.
The CRT board gets cold joints too especially on the big
white resistor pkg. 9-155-01

I don't really know much about repairing. I know a repair person who can swap it out but he doesn't know whether or not it will work. It's got a -01R and I just found an -05. I was told it was an 04 but he made a mistake. Would an 05 work?

Model number shows a high feature level. Higher the last
two numbers better the set.......

I dont remember a 9-160-01. Must be from the earliest runs.
in abt Sept 1979 IIRC. Like cars new model years start in late summer
USUALLY.

Subs for others are
9-160-03 to 9-160-05
9-160-04 to 9-160-06
There was a 9-160-08 IIRC & subbed back to 9-160-05 IIRC !
Otherwise dont back sub them as there are two different kick start
circuits used. It may not work or worse !
I think findem has the CRSP book with all subs.

could you post a pic or a video or something with it flickering? need more info like is it a high voltage flicker or a video flicker. Those boards are not hard to fix, they were the bread butter of shops back in the day. take the board out and reflow everything and at the end of the boards where all of the plugs snap into.

jbattles is right ! Lets fix this damn set ! If its on the 9-160 they
got tons of cold joints over the years. If you can post a video
showing the symptom that would be great.
Yes there are tons of boards out there. BUT used ones will almost
al need some work even if "working". Keep in mind at the time
Zenith sold more TV than anyone, between 20% & 25% of all US
sales. -06 went into over half of 19"-25" sets. So lets get to
fixin this set hopefully with a few inches of solder.

Mine would not even light the screen or make sound (beyond hum) till I retouched the solder on it....And I was not the first either...Some traces got cooked long ago and someone soldered wire bridges across the burns.

Don't forget to clean the connector cables.

Zenith

I just plugged her in for the first time in a couple of weeks. It's flickering but not as bad as it was last time I tried using it.

Just tried uploading vids from iPhone but it's saying invalid file.??
