Found my SNES
Now, I'm a hardcore SEGA fan.. It's gotta be SEGA this and SEGA that. But secretly, I was also a Nintendo fan, but only for some of there consoles. I didn't care for the NES except for Mario and Zelda. But I did like the SNES because it had pretty good graphics chips. I loved the Genesis more though because it had a nice Yamaha FM synthesizer and TI PSG chips (which allowed a more realistic arcade port of games, making them sound like the arcade versions of the time), and a very powerful 68000 CPU. SNES was just a 16-bit 6502 really. Not impressive.
But anyway, here it is! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nka6V2qV_U8 It features my old Samsung TV, and also has up close gameplay, right to the CRT and had my camera filming at 30fps with a 1/30th shutter, so it captures without flicker.. AND it was white balanced to it, so you can see the beautiful D65 calibration it has now too.. |

Very cool, the snes was quite a machine when it came out. Well.. it was pretty good at least, though it had a massive amount of great games for it. Ive still my snes, nes, atari 7800 and sega hooked up.
These days id rather retro game than anything else, its like therapy or a shot of whiskey, leaves me in a good mood afterwards.

I am definitely all for retro games.. They were games.. These days it's just more like some foolish simulation, than a game.
Just got a Super Game Boy too now for my SNES, and it's funny, being able to play my Game Boy Zelda game, on my TV.. So weird doing this. I even have a Super Famicom controller, which while mostly the same as the american version, but has those colored buttons. |

In your YouTube video at about the 6:45 minute mark you note a bar in the video that runs from top to bottom in the center of the screen.
As I have been researching how-to videos involving repair of my SNES I've been all over YouTube for advice. I ran across a guy that improved (increased) the power supply filtering which either reduced, or eliminated the noise bar (assuming yours is for the same reason). I had a set that wouldn't boot a game so the noise bar wasn't my problem- I didn't watch the whole video. Nor, could I tell you how to find it. But, it might be of help to you if you wanted to go searching for it. Hope that helps you. Brian |

I never had a SNES and have limited experience with them. Considering what has been said about the graphics, I'll have to do some research on them. |

Game collecting is the other side of my tv/vcr collecting habit. I play a little but nothing like how i used to play back around 98,2000. I collect more than i play. Just picked up a SNES at a yard sale a few days ago for $15. Heck, the original power supply is worth nearly that. I was always a Genesis/Sega CD man, but those old SNES machines put out some nice graphics and stereo sound. Super Mario World is addicting. I'll never forget my first machine and game though. Couldnt sleep at night thinking about it and next day, i couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Atari 5200 and Pac-Man

Oh my.......... I dont wanna make ya mad but I think quality of games went downhill as the 80s went on.....
I think Atari 5200 and 7800 are garbage compared to 2600..... I dont like how they look,etc........... Colecovision came out the same time about 5200 did and I think Coleco is 100% better |

It has gotten worse as time progressed. 5200 was my first and immediately after, i got a 7800 and eventually a 2600. Problem with the 2600 is the simpler graphics versus more detail and variation in the later models. The 2600 couldn't come close to the arcades so thats where the colecovision, intellivision and 5200 came in. They were designed to look like arcade. Best example is pac man on the 2600. Just plain pathetic. Doesnt look or even sound like the arcade but the 5200 did a better job with pac man. The pause button was a nice feature to if you needed to stop in the middle of a game for a bit. I find that almost every system has its shining point and will never be replaced by anything else. Im actually picking up a colecovision lot for $100 in a couple weeks.

Pac.attack, just looking at those pictures brings back great memories. I had a lot of fun playing many of those Colecovision cartridges with my friends in the early 1980s. I was always calling them, asking when new releases were coming out. In fact, I still have their phone number memorized, 800-842-1225.
The Atari 7800 came out just as the whole video game industry was collapsing (imagine THAT happening now!), and dedicated games for it were hard to find. In 1985-86 or so, I used to go right to Atari headquarters in Sunnyvale where they had a small "company store", and they sold each of the new 7800 releases for $10-15 each. I think it was right after that when they went out of business or were bought by Jack Tramiel, and the 7800 went away.

I bought the SNES first.. Then some time in the mid 1990s I found a Genesis on the side of the road being thrown away.. The power switch was off track and was a bit harder to turn it on, and needed the hookup wires.. For something free, I was not going to complain that's for sure.. I always thought games looked and sounded better on the SNES.. But there were games that were better on the Genesis.. I liked Mortal Kombat 1 and 2.. I remember on the Genesis they looked and sounded awful.. Sure the Genesis had the code for the blood and violence with the first one, but it didn't imo make it better than the SNES version..

Just a little piece of info,
That Yamaha chip was only on the early model 1's, The ones that actually say "High Definition Graphics" after that Sega slapped a Z80(?) in there and that combined with some CPU power almost emulated the Yamaha. One of my favorite game, Hellfire and a few others from 89/90 will lag on the later consoles. Sorry I have stumbled upon my profession here. |
