'60 Cadillac Pittman arm
This was a 1978 recall of the '59 and '60 model years after a few years in court. It was an under strength arm that would snap on low speed, high stress moves like parking. It was ok at highway speeds. I knew about this from my '59 but forgot about it when I bought my '60 and a friend at a car show reminded me.
It went up on a lift today and sure enough it had not been replaced. If the arm has 1035 stamped on it that is the bad one. The replacement has 1038. It may be on either side of the arm. I think the number refers to a hardness rating. Very few production cars have the replacement as GM did not start until almost the end of '60 production. The replacements went to parts shelves for the recall. And those OEM parts are long gone but I found a reproduction from Rare Parts that is much beefier and dropped right in. My shop did it and tightened the ball joint bolts in 45 minutes. Steady as a rock on the road and now safe. My thanks to Dave Bourneman's Blast From the Past shop in Pottstown, PA.
