A video time-capsule
It's almost two hours long, but interesting to watch: it's the "Star Wars Holiday Special" from 1978, complete with all the commercials!!! I guess this is like the video-tape equivalent of a time-capsule. The video is here:

I guess that for 8-9 year old kids the show was ok. But for an older viewer, this show is really terrible. Don't know what the heck they were thinking.
Lucas did some of the most incredible movies of all time, but he also did some unbelievably stupidy things: this "Holiday Special", "Howard the Duck" and, of course, Jar Jar Binks. But what is nice about the recording of the "Holiday Special" is how it really transports the viewer back to 1978. I guess the fact that the commercials are all there is something that really helps on giving this feeling. |

The original air date(OAD) for The Star Wars Holiday Special was Friday, November 17, 1978 on the CBS network in the United States. Has not been broadcast since 11/17/78 in any format or TV station as this special only aired once on TV and basically has been forgotten and has become a cult classic amoung Star Wars fans as well. I was only 9 months old when this special aired:-)

Wasn't this the infamous show that also "featured" Bea Arthur? At a time when she was "in transition" between "Maude" & "The Golden Girls". Loved Bea, saw her one woman revue "And Then There's Bea" with pianist Billy Goldenson at the Murat Egyptian Room here in Indianapolis in around 2001/2002. But near a "Star Wars" special she did NOT belong RIP Bea, Rue, Estelle...waiting, waiting.....

OMG! No wonder why Lucas wants this to disappear and never be seen or heard of again. Funny thing is, I remember watching this as a kid.
Pure unadulterated cheese and nothin' but. Especially the clothing union psa with the pink pant suit wearing singer. LOL |

Vividly remember when this came out. Only saw parts of it, as it was hard to endure, even for an 11-year-old...
A real "squirmer"--one of those shows that has you squirming in your seat, trying to convince yourself to stick around, it's going to get better....only it doesn't... Much like "Highlander 2: The Sickening...." Mostly remember the introduction of Boba Fett in the animated sequences. BTW--in an ironic twist, though I don't think this show was was an influence on them, the Jim Jones Guyana Mass Suicide happened a day later.... Last edited by batterymaker; 08-26-2010 at 05:52 PM. |

I couldn't take much of it (I'm not a Star Wars fan, anyway) but did scan around enough to catch a great GM commercial with a guy soldering the quarter panel seams and talking about how much he likes his job. That was worth it for me!

Mein Gott. I remember this - barely - some cousin(s) of mine (or their mothers) making a big deal about this coming on...watching a few minutes of it and thinking it was stupid...that's pretty bad considering I was 3 years old. I do remember refusing to sit back down in the den and endure the program any further.
And one of my aunts: "You don't LIKE Star Wars, Ryan?" "Not anymore." |
