Firestone S7398-2 Project (Almost) Competed
I picked up this set because it was (1) Small, (2) Electronically simple, and (3) It had original knobs, feet, and back. Also, it’s an attractive design which my wife would allow to be displayed outside of my study.
Electronic restoration was simple despite some long-ago less-than-optimal restoration. The cabinet had some problematic features; such as a convex dial cover, a somewhat peculiar back, and previous refinishing with an unknown substance. It was also my first experience with a ‘photo finish.’ I was going to replace the dial cover with flat plastic, but it looked like a flat cover might impinge on the dial pointer. So, I tried to reproduce a convex cover. This was an imperfect reproduction, but it could have fooled anyone who didn’t look very closely. If interested, a brief tutorial on my process starts at this link: https://flic.kr/p/PEDHqw In this Flickr album I also show the reproduction back, and the rest of the album is aimed at novice restorers: https://flic.kr/s/aHskP3wUnb The completed project looks nice, but I plan to replace the flawed top veneer:
