Some of these sets did have annoying intermittents. Probably
related to environment like smoke, greasy cooking etc.
Fixed them by soldering in all transistors & IC's, sand down
contact pins for modules. Also bent in the tiny fingers on
the modules for better contact & sprayed them down.
G-2 controls got bad spots & sometimes the chromatic switch
got touchy. A 330 ohm on the 9-90 would give int. problems
when first going, same thing on 9-57 flat chassis. Upgrade to
a 1 watt film. Also a 1.5 ohm in the H. out base on rear of chassis.
The bottom chassis still uses ground lugs so watch that.
For tuner drift ground the AFT white/blue wire at tuner. If
still drifts its the tuner. If not the 150-190 IF strip or switch.

I've always wanted to pull the back to re-seat the modules, spray contact cleaner and touch some service adjustments (which is probably all it needs), but am too lazy...All it needs when it acts up is a slap or two on it's side or for me to kick the bench it sits on, and usually it behaves its self for a satisfactory interval.

I might take Jim up on his taunt. Of the 2-4 times in the last 4 years my bench has been it's cleanest/most organized that photo is one of them. ....Actually I can't quite take Jim up on that since I've shifted the mess around since he saw it, and could not recreate the EXACT state he saw it in to save my life.

Be assured that I'll go through and DeOxit everything in the TV. I take cleaning very seriously when it comes to TV's. They will also be living in a dry, cool, dust free (constant vacuuming) environment.

The Zenith already has the Sprague Orange Drop horizontal capacitor. Danny doesn't think the back was ever off the set.

I got both of these TV's home today, and I'm quite pleased with their performance. I had to hook the Zenith directly up to the coax from the cable box because it did not like getting channel 16 for some reason. It has a very good picture except for some convergence issues. The RCA Colortrak however, is a different story. When I first hooked it up and tested it, I was BLOWN AWAY by its incredibly good picture. It is RAZOR SHARP with excellent colors. It plays much nicer than the Zenith with channel 16. The Zenith has a strange problem though. The 1976 13" CCII also did this. On the Charter TV guide, the picture is good with good sharpness and brightness and all that. But when the guide goes off, the actual program is way too dark. If you crank the brightness up, the guide becomes way too bright. There is no "happy medium." The picture shows the Colortrak recieving channel 16 UHF.

I've been watching the Colortrak, and I've noticed something strange. A few minutes after you turn it on, you'll hear a very loud pop/arc sound. I think it's a loose module connection. I'll be Deoxiting all that stuff anyway.

Look at top right you will see that fuse. You may have to fold it down.
IIRC there is a white spark gap there, see if thats arcing.
The cold joints are on the board where the vert module plus on.
Check that over real good.

The RCA Colortrak cleaned up nicely and is working even better than before. The Zenith however, is being a peice of crap. I tried to clean the UHF tuner, and when I started to work it back and forth, the gears shattered. I'll go upstairs and clean it as normal, but this set is very high hours. Maybe it will be worth it.

Nice sets, RCAman. I also have that silver 13" portable, although it is currently back in Atlanta awaiting repair. It lost its HV while I was watching it one day.

RCAman, here is an RCA console that says Colortrak and XL100 just like your table model. This is a picture from my friend Danny.
