I agree with mstanton about the 289 not coming out until '65.
If you wanted an 8 on the '64 1/2 mustangs, comet, or falcons, you got the 260.

My beloved Comet had the 260- what a sweet little engine. Not fast off the line, but great overall performer.

I remember on senior skip-day I raced one of my closest friends who had a '68 or '69 Skylark with a 350. He left me in the dust, but the Comet didn't give up, kept getting closer and closer, then finally passed him at 117 mph. I still remember his face as I passed- priceless!

Loved those SB Fords

I had a '68 Mustang with the 289-2V. Best V8 on gas I ever had. Had to start real slow when it was wet out. That automatic would start out in 2nd gear if downshifted from Drive.
It did run out of breath at higher speed yet kept going.
I had a friend with a 260 in a '64 Comet back in high school, I recall it being a fun ride and it could lay rubber by speed shifting the C4 cruise-O-matic trans.

Ten weeks from a barn in Indiana to on the road!

You'd never know there were rust holes in the right rear door and quarter big enough to slide your fist through. Ironically, I did the initial metal work on them with patches made from the picture tube shield off a delta gun tube

Twenty miles under her belt now, and so far so good!!

You know, during casual conversation with Justin (OS X) at the convention I said, sure, I'd sell the Mercury. Little did I know that he was serious, and today he drove it home....

And so the hunt begins anew
