Another Console Saved From The Dump
I just aquired a Sears Silvertone model 101.825-4 AM/FM/phono console. I assume that Philco made it, as it is full of Loktal tubes. Heres a picture of it.
I need to find the schematic for this. The one inside the cabinet is really too small to read. The turntable is clean, and looks to be in good condition. It will come a little later after I get the radio half working. This is another case of "I just cant let it get tossed in the trash." When I picked it up, I figured that it was just AM and possibly ShortWave, or Police band. I was sure surprised that it has FM. Hopefully, it will be a goodie. The radio station buttons are all marked with the call letters of local stations. None of them are FM, that I know of, just AM. If you know where I can get a copy of the schematic, I will appreciate it. Bruce |

Is the FM band 88 - 108 or 42 - 50 mhz?

covers 88 to 108, is a real boom-box when working correctly, have had one in the dining room for over 15 years, gave it a full recap when I got it.

Sears 101825 1A and 1B are in Sams folder 16-33
Sears 101825 2C, 3D,E,F,G and 4 are in 62-18. I believe I have the first one, maybe the second - I'll look. |

Thanks, guys, I let it power up slowly on the variac all afternoon It has a MAJOR hum, so first things first. A nice cap job.
The FM discovery was totally unexpected, and there is a needle in the turntable! I need to fix the speaker grille. One of the chassis supports had fallen into the frame of the cabinet and got caught between the speaker frame and the grillework on the cabinet. Luckily, I got it out. For now, I went ahead and cleaned it up, and assembled everything the right way, and put it back together. So far, a power cord is all thats been done. I will take more pictures. The one I posted is a BEFORE picture. |

IIRC Silvertones starting out with 101 were built by Colonial.

OK, Thanks, Randy, I assumed Philco made it .........Loktals...... Mnufacturers besides Philco use those things? I cant recall seeing Loktals in units besides Philco... Of course, My mind could be slipping, as usual.
Caps were ordered today. Replacing all Electrolytics. I dragged out my honker Reading Glasses, and was able to get all information about parts off of the parts list glued inside the set~!!!! Then I compared the list to what I found in the set. I believe that some of the caps are just open. The B+ is over 350 volts at the output tube. I'll test them as I take them out, for no other reason than curiosity. |

Zenith used quite a few loktals, my 12H094 console with the old and new FM bands has several in it and of course the first 2 Trans-Oceanics were based on loktals. Motorola was a big user of loktals especially in car radios and mobile 2 way units. I've got a Crosley AA5 with the loktal line up also.
I picked up a Magnavox stereo amplifier with 4 6V6's at an estate sale several years ago and just for something different I'm going to change the sockets and put in 7C5's which are the loktal equivalent for the 6V6. It uses a couple of 5Y3's also and I think I'll change them to the 5AZ4 loktal version just because I can....

Hmmm. Had no idea about the use of Loktals... Thanks for straightening me out.
This Silvertone uses the 7C5. Too bad Nostalgia Air doesent have the Riders on this one. I think that I can get away with just a copy of the schematic. Going to have to buy a new idler tire for the record changer. The tire that controls the reject mechanism is clean and in good shape. The player runs on-speed as long as I dont try to reject the record playing... then it stops. Considering that all dial lights are original, and only one tube has been replaced, it seems that this little radio has seen little use. |

I didn't find Sams folder 62, but I found this online: http://techpreservation.dyndns.org/s...01825_131.djvu
Earlier version (1947). You'll need the DjVu browser plug-in from Lizardtech.com |

My Windoze copy is having trouble dealing with the Lizardtech site. Local dial-up is running really slow tonight. Thanks for looking it up for me!
