Saved a Mag. T-995 set...
It looks pretty good, other than a couple of "dings" the "helper" guy put in the bottom, while helping to put it in my van.
This chassis is NOT my favorite SS magnavox chassis--that honor would go to the T-979. BUT---I just could not "leave it there to die". Besides--I paid LESS than a DOLLAR for it !! The chassis also looks pretty clean--some dust but ok otherwise--and pretty much original and unnmolested. The tube is GOOD_-as can be told by the snow on the pix (that "black bar" is NOT in the real pix, something to do with the camera--likely a scan rate problem). So--no matter what--I now have a good 25VCXP22..and a good T-995 chassis too. Think about it...there is a VERY good chance---this old set showed the Reagan assassination attempt, the first shuttle disaster...the gas crisis, and so on....during it's "tenure"...along with a LOT of SNL episodes, perhaps !! Looks a lot like the one I bought new in 1979, even down to the metal trim pieces on the corners. One of the first sets with a comb filter, "Computer 330" I think they called it. Mine had a keyboard on the front and remote and the "Star System" tuner. Still working 10 years later when I sold it at the estate sale for my parents house. I remember adding a video input jack to it so I could plug my videodisc player directly in. It would clearly show the 5 mHz 400 lines horiz resolution from the test disc I had.

So this is what the T995 chassis looks like. This is the second T995 set I've heard of with the 25VCXP22, maybe all of them had that CRT as only one is a direct sub for it. I have the same CRT from a junk set; real junk, not merely what most collectors would call junk (read: almost anything post-roundie). No idea of its condition as I wouldn't risk powering up the set.

In 1979 Magnavox switched to an inline tube. 1978 was the last of the star systems with a delta gun CRT. I still have my 1978 Star System set. CRT is weak though. In all fairness it played for years from 5am till abouit midnight every day. Really high hours.

Yeah...they went to the T-809 and 815. Only real difference in them was the 815 had a cold VRT power supply, the 809 was hot . Both have mostloy the same module layout. Both I think had the flyback powering the tube fils and vertical supply. Both could be found in console cabinets.
The inline tube in the consoles was NOT as durable or long-lived--as a delta tube is, BTW. At least that has been my experience. |

It's not surprising to me that the inlines aren't as good. So the 25VCXP22 is known to hold up well? Also, are those colored speckles in the snow normal for a delta tube? My Chromacolor displays speckled (but not tinted) snow. It has an excellent picture with a signal of course.

Well--there was no signal, I just lit it off in the van--to see how the tube looked. it does sometimes have colored snow--not sure how it would look on a good signal, but I suspect it would look pretty good. I KNOW the tuner is pretty dirty--but could be cleaned up and work fine. It has plenty of brightness.
Not sure the VCX tube is real long-lived---but my own experience with 995 sets using it was they hold up pretty well. The 100% in-line used in the 809, 815 and the Zeniths did NOT hold up nearly as well--they were dying in the late 1980's... |

This one is just like the first 25" console that I bought. I ran it for almost 20 years before I gave it to a friend.
