Smith Kline French colour TV OB van in Australia
G'day all.
I have in the past posted articles in relation to early colour experimenting in Australia with the use of a Marconi BD848 3 IO tube colour camera which is Marconi's version of the RCA TK-41. So far I've mentioned that this camera was used at St Vincent hospital in Melbourne for closed circuit televising medical surgery in colour in the 1960s and in the early 70s Monash University ad a colour OB van which there was a photo of roundie monitors. Well I've now came across an interesting film on SKL colour televising medical operations from 1959 which can be seen here http://www.eafa.org.uk/catalogue/225571 and I noticed the OB van looked very familiar and cross referencing it to the Monash Uni OB van photos, they are totally identical but repainted with the Monash Uni logo!!! So I believe that it's likely after the SKL colour OB van/gear was retired from use in UK, it was shipped to Australia around 1960 (according to some source info) for use at St Vincent Hospital and then sold/donated to Monash University around late 60s/early 70s for educating students in the field of colour television! Here below are the pics of it being used at St Vincent hospital and Monash University:

Very nice! I wonder if the University had the budget to maintain and retube the cameras from time to time.

Just found my older post on the Monash Uni colour van http://www.videokarma.org/archive/in.../t-249618.html , those pictures I got from the Monash Uni site are dated 1971, images can be found on the following links:

Just found the original newspaper article on the colour OB van, it says they took delivery of the colour TV OB van last week and the paper dates 5th April 1971, so definitely 1971 was when they got the van! Article can be seen in the following link:

Quote:
What is remarkable about the SK colour TV work is that it predates a UK and European colour broadcast service by more than decade. This is an area where the US truly led the world by a large margin. I will try not to remind folk of CBS color |

OTOH, if they can get twice the price for drugs in US, they are just being good capitalists.
