An Orange Magnavox!

I just won this little B&W set from the Goodwill auction, I don't have it yet of course.

I thought it was kind of cute, looks like maybe they were trying for a Brionvega look, I'm guessing by the color this is from the late 70's, probably made in Taiwan.

It was listed as not working, that made it more interesting to me, I get to tinker with it as well as look at it.

I got it for $5 plus shipping, or about $20 total.

Is that a 5 inch screen? I have always been fascinated by small screen sets as evidenced by my recent purchases of Sony Watchman pocket TVs. Can you post some internal views? I like to check out the chassis design and build quality of portable sets.

Nice TV! It looks like this set has a continuous UHF tuner; so, that would put it no newer than around '74. It also uses the old style Magnavox logo that wasn't replaced until '77-'78.

The listing said it had about a 6.5 inch screen so I'm thinking 7" CRT.

I'll post pictures of the insides when I get it, hopefully it won't be a pile of rubble when it gets here. It only has to go 400 miles.

Um, the 3rd picture doesn't look like the same TV. :/

Anyways, radiotvnut, how can you tell it's a continue UHF tuner? By the lack of notches and it counting in 10's?

Yes, the click-stop tuners have each individual number on the dial.

Because the third picture is the Brionvega I was comparing it to, guess I should have pointed that out.

Congratulations from the resident Magnavox nut! I saw that on their site, and put a link up to a friend, and referred to it as Tomatovision. I'm glad a tv collector got it. I had one non working b&w portable for a while, wish I'd kept it anyway. I liked a lot of their portable tvs from the '60s and '70s, color and other.

I had an ivory coloured Magnavox very similar to that with a 9" screen as I recall. Mine was made for them by Sanyo, as were most of their small battery fed electronics (portable cassette recorders, record players, radios).

Got the set today, intact!

It's an AC/DC model, it will run on 12v DC if I had the cord, also there's a plug on the bottom for a battery pack option.

Not sure who made it but it was made in Japan, very nice quality inside and out, the CRT says NEC on it so perhaps they made the whole set, the CRT is a 200DP4, I'm not sure how they measure these metric tubes but it's probably 200 Millimeters or 7.8 inches, it doesn't look that large however.

It did come with the AC cord and it does work, the CRT seemed a little soft at first but it came up nicely after running a while.
It has the usual dirty controls but not bad, also there were some spots of gray paint spattered on top, I scraped them off but they etched into the Styrene plastic a little so they will have to be buffed out. Overall nothing is broken except the Antenna mast, otherwise it has the usual wear and tear of a nearly 40 year old portable, various fine scratches and what not.

I'll post some pictures later tonight.

Allrighty then, it does have some issues, namely a lack of Sync in both horizontal and vertical modes, it won't lock solidly in either direction.

I was able the roll to slow down enough to snap these pictures, it rolls sideways also, no doubt some dried up, leaky capacitors.
