Can anyone ID this set?
Photo I got at an estate sale a while back. It looks like it says "GENERAL ELECTRIC" on the front but I can't be sure.

GE 830. Apparently desirable for the "Mercedes logo", at least that was how the one for sale at the ETF swap meet this year was promoted. Was tempted, but I'm holding out for an 814.

I think I have that exact same set. There's a couple pictures of it posted over on the ARF.
http://antiqueradios.com/forums/view...p?f=3&t=154398 [edit] I guess there's only one picture left of it in that thread. I can take some more pictures if you're interested in seeing it in more detail. Last edited by Kevin Kuehn; 09-14-2012 at 02:17 PM. |

I have one of these but the logo is missing, probably went on a chain around someones neck back in the 80's.
Guess I'll have to swipe one off a Mercedes to replace it. I seriously doubt GE would have deliberately used a logo associated with a German car so soon after WWII however... A Google search seem to indicate this is a model 835, not an 814. This Brochure from TVhistory seems to verify that though the set on the Brochure does not have the logo. Perhaps it was some sort of Promotional item though it seems odd, however the emblem seem to be exactly the same as a Mercedes emblem. http://www.tvhistory.tv/1947-49-GE-Photos-Pg1.jpg Sony supposedly made a version of their 5" set for Mercedes dealers back in the 60's and of course Philco made a set to go with the Ford Mustang though it doesn't have any Ford logos on it. |

I didn't say it was an 814, I said I want an 814, hence I passed on the 830. I can buy a logo falling off, but I don't know how it then acquires a checkerboard grill where the horizontal slats had been....

I'm pretty sure the set in the OP picture is an 830, as is mine. The bases are completely different between the 830 and 835. The 830 not having the separated front feet as does the 835, instead it has a continuous block that runs across the front bottom cabinet. Also that logo can't fall off, it's part of the grill pressing on mine.

The Mercedes logo on that GE is something very curious indeed. But what about that Admiral? If you look with attention, you will see, that on the right corner of the speaker grille there is something that, to me at least, really looks like the Starfleet symbol that is present on the uniforms of the crew of the USS Enterprise. Since "Star Trek" was created in 1964, and the TV is obvioulsly from the 50's, maybe the designer of the uniforms was "inspired" by this TV???
