Zenith T/O H500

I came across this real nice Zenith Transoceanic H500 yesterday.

I love these things.

Cabinet is in great condition.

The selenium rectifier has been replaced with a diode and dropping resistor, all caps and resistors have been replaced except for the mica caps. The 1L6 has been replaced with a loctal 1LC6 and adapter

The antenna is straight, and locks into place.

There was a Stratosphere at Goodwill the other day. Someone bought it for $35.

But HERE is the rest of the story about the T/O I just picked up.

I went to a guy's house to see about the Transoceanic, and he wanted to show me his radio collection. In his house there were at least 25 classic old radios from the 1930's. Probably 17 or 18 consoles and the rest were Cathedrals and Tombstones. Some table radios. Everything was in ridiculously nice condition. Many round dial Zeniths, and others that were pretty rare radios. I was in awe of what I saw. A couple large rooms that could pass as a museum, and a couple smaller rooms as well. Truly an amazing collection. I felt like whipping out my phone and taking some photos, but thought the better of it.

We talked radios for a while, and then he GAVE me the T/O. He told me he's not into radios for money. But just for the fun and pleasure of collecting. He said he could tell that I would give it a good home.

I have found that antique radio people are very fine human beings. This guy was a cut above that. I'm still amazed at his collection, and his generosity.

What a find! You should live so long! I have one dead console and two dead tombstones in the shop. I'm getting radio withdrawal syndrome.

Have you realigned you radio since you replaced the 1L6 with the 1LC6 and adapter?

I found that when I replaced the 1L6 on my L600 with the Locktal tube, the longer leads on the adapter and/or the metal base of the 1LA6 caused the alignment to shift, and I had to tweak the coils a bit. Worked quite well, though on the highest band (16m/17Mhz), I couldn't tune the oscillator to match the dial. I simply aligned that band to 200kHz off calibration, and remember to add add the 200kHz to the display when using 16m (sadly, very rare now, in the solar "millennial minimum").

He told me that aligned it after he added the adaptor.
