Most likely a manufacturing defect, I have also seen this in CRT's that have been rebuilt. I have a Zenith roundie with a Channel Master rebuilt 21FJP, that has a small error, that is hardly noticeable. All it would take is for a small chunk to fall down onto the mask, during the neck removal or reinstallation process, especially during rebuild.

If you think that sucks, then put your self in miniman82's shoes....He had that happen on a working prototype metal cone color CRT. The neck glass near the base one day randomly decided to fracture, and there went a few k dollars worth of it's value.

Just found out where this set came from and who owns it. This set belonged to Mrs. Rose Roti who lived on 1031 Woodbine Ave (cool house) in Oak Park IL. Sadly, Mrs. Roti passed in 1997. Wonder what she would think if she saw the set working again.
