Unusual Silvertone battery radio
I was digging around ni the shop and found this '46 Silvertone (model 6220A) battery radio. This set has an RF stage and variable inductor tuning; so, it should be a decent performer. Unfortunately, someone added a switch to the front for the purpose of switching on and off a battery eliminator and the dial string is broken. And, I hate restringing dials on any radio! The reason I say this is an unusual radio is because it has a phono input jack, which I don't think I've ever seen on a battery set. There must have been a springwound attachment available for these models.
I've also pictured one of the old Eveready "AB" packs from the '40's. It is, of course, dead and I used the receptical for my battery eliminator project. Does anyone know about when these "AB" (90V,1.5V) packs were discontinued? An old friend told me that he special ordered one as recent as the early '70's; but, that seems a little recent to me. Maybe the one he got was a NOS one that was still good. BTW, this radio still had the perma-power battery eliminator, which I've rebuilt, still inside. |
