Huge Projection Set on eBay

Anybody know more about this set? Cabinet looks homemade...probably one of the biggest old TVs I've seen, like one of those Huge Curtis Mathes Consoles turned on its end.

That set was made by United States Television in the late 40s. The cabinet is original. It came in wood finish and several colors of leatherette. It was designed for use in bars and originally sold for about $2000.

Here's an ad from the 1948 USTV catalog showing the two models of their "bar" sets. I have the wood version in my collection, the leatherette model is just too damn ugly even for me.

You've actually got one? Does it work? I've seen pictures of them, I've never SEEN one. Must be a bit creepy to work on - bigtime high voltage on them I guess.
IIRC, RCA had some projection CRTs that were up in the 60 - 80 kv (!) range. So high they had a special corrugated bulb design to keep HV leakage down. The tubes needed regular infared baking and all every few hundred hours. i recall reading about this in an RCA book on TV (which naturally patted RCA on it's back w.r.t. TV development....) Blacked out face? I'd have one too if I had such a tacky wimpy tattoo... Man, good luck to whomever gets that thing - parts availability must be tettering on non existant! RCA projection sets pop up occasionally, but none are THAT big.

It does work, although not great. The HV power supply is only putting out about 15KV instead of the 30KV it should. I'm guessing one of the caps in the tripler is bad. Chuck

Yes, all the tubes have been checked and even substituted with new.
