You're thinking about the difference between the 16E and the 16X. It seems that the 16E came out in early 1965 and the 16X came out in late 1965, as a '66 model.

also, the 16x had the 21FJP22A vs the 21FJP22, being that the A had truer colors.

Speaking of the XL, anyone know a good sub for the inrush themistor (R208 on the Sams, 120 ohm cold), and the VDR for degauss (R209)?

Also, my picture is somewhat dim and has smear in the luminance. The former makes me think blanker (tried swapping tubes, haven’t measured horz current yet), but wow, the 1V2 for focus glows pretty bright (!).

The latter - bad coil, cap, or delay line? The smear just… happened one day.

The CTC16X used a 2AV2.
A CTC16E I worked on had a 1V2, where the dropping resistor was bad. I jumped the resistor and installed a 2AV2. Noted the change on the TLD.

The "X" model had a rare-earth 21FJP22!

Heh, yeah a 1V2 in there would glow. The tube I pulled was a 2AV2…

Was the 16XL the first RCA to use that tube?

The 16X, 17X and the newer chassis used them. Around the same time the other firms, that used a tube focus rectifier started to use them! It saved a dropping resistor!

I always found it weird the 15 used a solid state focus rect, but they went back to tubes again. Cost? Reliability?

You used to be able to find them sold in pairs, " workman" or whatnot, but now, finding any of them intact on sites like evil-bay takes quite a bit of luck, it still may be done if you keep looking.

example

one for a CTC-20

No reason for it not to work in a ctc-16
