Two 13 channel "Hallicrafters"
At the ETF auction I resisted the good 15GP22s and left them go to good homes.
I wanted the Hallicrafters T-54 and got it. But it came as a "twofer" with what I (and the auctioneer) thought was another one in the wood case. Both have Channel 1. The metal is octal IF tubes and the wood is 6AU6s. But the bonus ... the wood one is not Hallicrafters. Its a Delco VT-71, a well known but unusual rebrand job. It says Delco right on the front in unreadably faint scribed letters. These are ac-only (voltage doubler and a -150V supply) transformerless sets. The Delco chassis is pristine and unrestored. The Hallicrafters is dirty on top and I have not removed from the case, but see a large paper under the CRT so its probably unrestored also. Last edited by dtvmcdonald; 05-06-2018 at 07:42 PM. |

Nice finds. Every serious TV collection has to have at least one of the 7" pushbutton Hallicrafters. Raymond Loewy did a nice job giving the sets a clean post-war modern look. The re-badged Delco and Airline models are all the more unique. The only problem with these sets, if you want a working one, is the flyback issue where the screen goes dark after 20 or so minutes. Removal of the HV container top and the temporary installation of a small computer fan completely solved the problem with my 505.

Electrostatic deflection sets do NOT have flybacks, they have HV oscillator coils.

a unsoldered wire on the original after ordering the new one. I have not yet tested the two Halli CRTs. |

I stand corrected. Never the less coil is problem on those Hallicrafters.

Lord almighty! (pardon the religious reference)
The price of repair capacitors, terminal strips, and three-wire power cords is up near the price I paid for the radios! This does not count the spray paint for the metal one. The 0.047 6kV caps are not cheap! 0.1 6kV caps are cheaper, but more likely to kill me, so I bought the correct ones. One CRT has a loose base, which I did not take off, but feels like the wires are OK. Taking it off safely will be a real chore for my solder sucker. At least, no mice. |
