I left this Tektronix behind at the Thrift
This was at the local thrift store yesterday, $40 but I left it there.
One reason, it's huge (note the two handles), other reasons were all the knobs and tubes had been removed. I probably could have replaced the tubes with ones from my stock but the knobs would have been a nightmare. |

Not the best choice for a general purpose scope... VERY high sensitivity, but only 1 mHz bandwidth max (lower at higher sensitivities). Differential inputs. Designed mostly for Bio-Medical research. The dual beam jug is interesting.

Probably could get away with the cheap chicken head set screw knobs if you've got some stashed away....I've seen some funky knob substitutions on test equip that was....Lets say thoroughly enjoyed by the tech/shop that owned it.

I just scrapped one for the tubes. This one had the plug-in subchassis. Forget it! No one wants that rubbish. |

But isn't that the one that has, like, a bajillion tubes?

i probably would have still grabbed it , if anything for parts . i like those big tektronix scopes i have 2 545 scopes that may need something someday , after going through the 545b i would like find a crt with the blue phosphor , just because don't have one. sometimes if you ask about a big scope like that one sitting out , they my still have the cart. i picked up the tektronix cart and 545b scope for 50.00 the cart alone is worth more than that.

For $20 I might have hauled it home for parts, but for $40 it can sit.
If it's still there next week I might make an offer. I have a newer SS Tek scope sitting in the garage that I think works. |

I had an RM35 (rack mount version of a 535) once. The HV transformer went out and was very expensive to replace.

The 5642 HV rectifier tube is a common part. Sylvania used it in many 50s era TV sets.

Yes, 5642s are still pretty common. And replaceable by NTE517 silicon diodes if desired. I have done so on a couple 500 series scopes, as well as a 453. It takes the filament load off the HV transformer, promoting cooler operation.

i think i like the diodes ,the two 545a i have are in very nice condition ,i don't think they were used a lot ,i was told years ago that tektronix made most of all there own parts ,and you had to get parts from them to be reliable , never needed anything yet. oh well live and learn .

Power tranny failures are common! Silver content solder tie strips! Electrolytic failures are common now.
I have a 570 tube curve tracer. Put your credit card on the floor in front of it, it's maxed in the morning.... Eats all day long! Hungry(!) critters |

Several years back they had a "Ham fest" in Knoxville. It was SORTA under the "Auspices" of Oak Ridge lab. It looked to me like someone had decided to clean out all their closets, Junque Holes, Hidee Holes... It was 13 June, my birthday. It was in the gym at this local elementary school, & YOU don't have a CLUE as to how HOT, sticky, Nasty... There must have been a couple pickup trucks' worth of worn out, broken parts, a fellow MIGHT have been able to possibly get a halfway decent scope out of that WHOLE mess...Maybe. The best part of the whole mess was this tall-6 feet blonde gal who had a too tight halter top & Daisy Duke pants. All their "Ham" stuff was those junk-o-tronic scopes, a few other goodies-but NO boatanchors, anything halfway neat. Most of the people there were kids who likely had NEVER seen a Tooob type 'scope...Oh, well...At least the tall, blonde in the white halter top was pretty nice to look at...(Grin)
