Another Old Magnavox Console. Again.
I'm going tomorrow to pick this up. Got it for 20 bucks. I don't know what model it is, but it has the older style tonearm and different knobs that my other two Maggies. Supposedly everything works as it should. I will find out.

Digging through some scans of catalogs, and I came up with this, from 1962.
This might be it. 8 speakers???? |

I went and looked at it this morning. The photos must be from at least 20 years ago.
The cabinet is in bad shape, it sounds like at least two speakers are having issues, the phonograph makes a hideous grinding sound as it spins. There is no audio when playing a record. I could not get any AM stations, and FM sounded pretty bad. The area it is in normally has good reception on both AM and FM. The house smelled like pee, and it wouldn't surprise me if rats were living in the cabinet. "Works as it should" is what I was told. HA! Oh well....the hunt is half the fun. Onward I go! |

20$ ain't bad for a tube console. Fresh capacitors in the tuner and amp, a new pickup cart, and some lube and it should work like new...I'd save a dozen of these before I give a solid state console a second look.

It was a basket case, and the place gave me the heebie jeebies.
I'm not skilled at doing the electrical work myself. I'm sure I'll find another one that won't need a total rehab like this one. They should be ashamed for sending me those photos. They were not an accurate representation of it at all. |

I could teach a monkey to change capacitors. All you do is match value and solder. You don't need one iota of skill, just some time and the desire to learn.

This monkey is old, has poor eyesight, and his fingers show the results of decades of work in construction. A monkey wearing boxing gloves could do it before I could.

Audiophiles like the tube amps found in Magnavox consoles. You could remove it and toss the cabinet, and a tube loving audiophile would be happy to buy it.

Those amps tend to sell for 10x what they were charging for that console...I never pass up a reasonably priced maggie tube HiFI even if the cabinet is far beyond restoration.
