Greasy spoon is a VERY common phrase in New England. So is a dive,
a mafia joint etc.
Funny thing is greasy spoons almost always have the BEST cheeseburgers.
Them were the days when little lunch counters were a fixture of down town,
anyplace, USA. I can still see the neon sign "EATS" glowing.
