Maybe cool to you but his ad state that it is a "VINTAGE 1940's TV SET". I questioned him on this and await a response. Reason being the set is obviously a 60's set. Very late 50's at best. It looks to me to have a rectangular crt. 60's. Still though if you think its cool and can avoid shipping costs by picking it up then go for it. I doubt you will have to bid battle on that one. Its worth the $24 if you like it. My opinion is that the vertical section seems to be the most troublesome in almost all old sets. It may be the output tube as the seller mentioned but of course that is the easiest and most logical fix for advertisment purposes. I seriously doubt he has any idea about the repair of the set. Getting the sweep back should not be much trouble if you have some TV repair experience. If you DON'T and want to get into the hobby, a set like this would be a good start.

I'm the one who has that TV set- if you think you know what year it is, then you can argue that point with the 85 year old lady that owns it, who said she bought it in the late 1940's. Good luck with that- it would not be a mannerly, intelligent thing to do. I'm have not researched it, so I'm going by what the owner told me. I surely am not going to contradict some elderly person in their own home, and get in an argument with them, over the age of their old TV set. You need to look at the big picture once in a while. Don't sweat the little stuff so much.
On the tube replacement fix, her son runs an electronics repair shop at that location, behind their home, for the past 30 years now. I'm sure he knows what is wrong with the set- but he doesn't want to be bothered with it. If you want to debate that point with him, again- have at it- but I firmly believe his diagnosis will be correct- having watched him repair 4 vintage tape players for me in about 30 minutes one day- and he's done about 20+ repairs or more for me, in the past 6 months or so. The man is the most highly skilled electronics tech I have ever met in my life, and routinely diagnoses problems down to the component level- he's not a "board changer". I would bet money, he's more adept at repairing these things, than most- your comments are surely not appreciated as to him having "no idea". He's an EXPERT.
No need to jump to hasty conclusions ! Not everyone selling an old TV set is unknowledgeable, and there's no need to be so suspicious all the time. Esp. in this case, where the Ebay feedback, is stellar. What's the problem ?
Having said that, I put the set on the TV swap forum here. They actually have TWO sets, they have another old set with a metal frame, I believe that one is an RCA. They want to get rid of both. These people are getting up in age and just want to clean out their home. |
