It looks quite a bit bigger than a 19" to me. There were some large round tubes made, mostly used by DuMont. The 19AP4 does seem to get a bad rap. I wonder if other metal/glass crts are as troublesome. The issue is vacuum loss at the seam. If that were the case they all would be trouble.

I wonder why they ever made the metal tubes.

THe SC modular chassis were very well designed and are a breeze to work on. They also produce a pretty damn good picture.

I once had a Majestic TV (1951 model) which had a round 16GP4 CRT (metal cone). Never had one bit of trouble with the tube losing vacuum or anything else. Also, I did not realize that round CRTs had seams anywhere in or on them; in fact, I don't recall seeing a seam anywhere on the 16GP4 in my set. (I learn something new all the time reading the posts in these forums.)

Round metal-cone CRTs: I agree with you one hundred percent. Those tubes worked well enough, but the metal cone created the heck of a HV shock hazard, as I think the cone was one half of an HV filter capacitor, the bell of the tube being the other (this technique, IIRC, replaced doorknob HV caps in many if not most 1950s sets with round CRTs). IMHO, the best thing ever to happen to television CRTs was when the manufacturers gave up on metal-cone tubes and switched to glass exclusively, which all but eliminated the shock hazard.

I think you may be confusing Stromberg-Carlson with Setchell-Carlson; they were two different companies. Setchell-Carlson sets were known for having a modular "unitized" chassis, but weren't Stromberg-Carlson sets more typical in construction..?

The metal cone tubes have a seam where the glass face is bonded to the metal cone, they also have a seam where the neck is joined to the other end of the cone.
That said I have a 50+ year old 16AP4 that is still holding vacuum as was the worn out tube it replaced.
I think the bigger tubes (19", 24" 30") probably had more problems because of the larger joint surface and the extra expansion contraction problems.

The metal tubes don't hold a charge on their own but I guess you could still get shocked with the set off if the doorknob cap was charged up.

You're right setchell carlson is what I was thinking of.

Dont feel bad as i get the two confused once in awhile myself. Still a cool tv though.

The seller says he blew a resistor by turning up the focus control. I wonder what that means? Maybe he incorrectly replaced a cap or two? :scratch2: Looks like a nice little set.

Somebody should give this set a home. Sparton IMHO made some of the best sets of the late 40's to early 50's. I have a very similar set as this only a bit older. As a teen in the early 80's I used to go to the flea market every weekend and I would always see an older man (older to me at the time, probably 50) sitting at his table viewing what is now my TV. To people then such sets were steadily becoming junk since color sets had been easily avilable for 15 or more years. I remember always thinking back then and before that the older 50's sets that many people still had in their home were interesting. In a lot of cases the older sets had a color table model sitting on top.

At any rate the man reluctantly sold me the set for maybe $15 or so. That was about the going rate at the time. The set performs well to this day with one of the sharpest pictures and stronget reception of anything I own. There is not much of a need for an external antenna. Although it has never needed work I did take it apart once for a good dusting and discovered the extreemly well built chassis with dual rectifier tubes. To me that is at least one sign of a good set. Another top dog is Dumont which did the dual rectifiers a lot.

Sorry for the winded story but I don't see a lot of these and wanted to hopefully lead someone to save a possibly great set.:thmbsp:
