Very interesting.

Oh no, not a home-brew at all. That unit is a Norelco "Duo-View" B&W projection TV adapter. The customer would purchase the (lower) unit, which consisted of a cabinet containing the projection optics and CRT (3NP4), HV power supply, horizontal and vertical deflection circuitry, LV power supply, deflection failure protection circuitry, and a cathode follower for the video. Video and horizontal and vertical signals were taken from the customers TV set as inputs to the projector. A band switch in the projection unit allowed the customer to either watch the TV or use the projection unit to display up to a 3' X 4' picture on an external screen (in a very dark room!).

Looks like a VERY nice arrangement. If I had lived in those days, I would have liked to have something like this myself!

How reliable it was?

Geez! I would think there would be some serious collectors driving the bids on that thing beyond $66. No telling what the reserve is.....

I have an 8T-243 that is very similar. Top portion that is, although I am not lucky enough to have the double D crt border surround. Instead mine has the uglier rectangular style. I have always wondered why some sets with round crt's had double D and others rectangular. Anybody know??

Double D masks came into vogue shortly after the first porthole sets appeared. Generally speaking, 1948 and earlier sets had rectangular masks; 1949 and later sets had double D masks.

Why? Bigger image--at the expense of the corners. Apparently a negligible expense.

I think I remember the cartoon that scene is from. Huckleberry Hound was on a house call, repairing a TV that required a very rare type of tube. He was able to get the tube after a lot of searching all over town, but before he could install it in the set, the owner's dog somehow snatched the tube and buried it in the back yard.

Here is a set I love. It is a Sparton from I would say the early 50's. I bought this set while still in everyday use back in the 80's. I have kept it all these years because it seems to be indestructable. Also I have never run into another so it may not be what you would call common. It looks like Sparton really made a good product. Around 50 years of service unrestored!! :thmbsp:

I have the console version of that Sparton. It kind of works as received, but I need to re-cap it.

Really I should re cap mine as after all these years the horizontal size takes a few minutes to fill the screen, and after about 20 minutes the vertical size starts shrinking at the bottom. Very likely these are both cap issues, the later may be a resistor changing value after heating up.

I say this set would go another 50! Its built like a tank. It picks up channels clear as a bell with NO antenna, and the raster is bright and crisp as any I have ever seen.

Does anybody know how Sparton ranked as far as quality? I would compare it to the quality of a Dumont myself....

Big screen 630
 

Saw this earlier this week as part of a massive estate sale. Now it is being parted out. Looks like a 12" upgrade of the classic 630. No HV cage cover. Not mine.

It is near me and I can pick it up and deliver to Kutztown on Saturday only. Pricey at $300. Make offer.
