My family had an '86 Duster and an '86 Fifth Avenue with the stereo on the AM band. I never realized there actually were AM stations broadcasting in stereo. At the time, I just thought it was some kind of ambience circuit in there to enhance the sound.

I think some premium OEM car stereos (on American cars, anyway) still offer Am stereo. There is a website somewhere that lists and compares all the different am stereo receivers made, including all those car radios. Chrysler did seem to be the main one to push it early on-maybe a lingering connection to Motorola? Right now I have a late 80s Chrysler stereo (made by Mitsubishi) in my 96 Dakota-most of 'em seem to interchange-I got it just for am stereo, a novelty is all. A few stations still use it although both local "daytimers" that use to be am stereo have dropped it for some reason.

That used to be 3 Meters but it wasnt used hardily so they gave it up. (2 isnt used much either)

I love it when 3 Meters opens up. One time during a band opening I got 104.5 CHOM for houea on end,.it sounded like a local!!
