I have this same model that i have restored back into operation several years ago. this set is an amazing performer for being a "budget" model. both the TV & radio sections function very well. however, the handle & the thumb screws that attach the handle to the set are missing on mine. if anybody has those, please PM me.

i also have a complete parts chassis with a good CRT as well.

I like the bakelite GE locomotive and the 7" '50 Motorola the best. They look like nice examples!

The Locomotive is 100% restored and operates nicely. The 7" Motorola I haven't had a chance to even clean up yet.

So what do I do today? I go out and end up getting more sets. Pretty soon I'm gonna need to go into rehab :sigh:

But....but....they were free!

Very nice groups of sets. My faves are the maple cabinet Zenith, the RCA BW Deluxe, and the CTC 7 Sanford! On the rehab....I'm afraid it's already too late....for both of us! :-) :-)

Decided I'd crack open the black and gold RCA just for grins, and what do I see? Hm, looks like the seleniums were replaced with diodes! A very good sign!

And sure enough, it works! Brought it up VERY slowly, appears as if it was restored 20 plus years ago....but it still works! I'll have to go in and replace a few wax caps, and the control shaft extensions were crumbling apart, but other than that, what a pleasant surprise! :)

The Zenith 19" portable you picked up reminds me of a similar set used as a video monitor in my high school's CCTV system 40+ years ago; it (and almost certainly the rest of that system) is long gone by now, almost 40 years since my class graduated.

Your set looks like it is missing the channel selector knob, but if you can set the tuner on channel 3 or 4, even if it means using a pair of pliers to do it (!), you won't need the knob anyhow since any DTV box or cable box you connect to it will have an output signal on one of those channels. Being near Buffalo, you would probably use channel 3 as the output channel, but since all TV is digital these days it probably wouldn't matter which channel you selected to receive the output of the converter or box. Even if you use channel 4, the signal from the box would more than likely override the broadcast signal, since the former will be fed directly into the tuner via coax.

My modulator broadcasts on channel 9, so as long as that station's good, it's fine by me. The knob is just an aesthetic thing, of course.

Two words: Stove. Knob.

Do it! :naughty:

What a tour! You need T-shirts made up for something like that. It takes some of us a year to find that many treasures but somehow, you end up moving them along.

That 17" black and gold RCA was made by Sylvania, the upper-lower chassis. I got a red-silver one last year and haven't worked on it. Just dreading the pc board, that's all.

I had a trip like that once! Awesome collection you got there! I once picked up 15 sets in one haul from a retired TV repairman, wish a dumont doghouse and GE locomotive set was in it like your haul.

PLEASE tell me those were NOT all sitting by that garbage can...to be put out for the packer man !!

Radiotronman 05-17-2015 07:36 PM

No,

I was too excited to carry them into the house first. I got them out of the car to check them out and take pictures. I got 10 more sets that day.
