I had one of the 23" 14N22 sets in the metal cabinet, and this 22" is a lot smaller and lighter, without sacrificing much in tube size. Now that I think about it, I'm surprised they didn't switch entirely over to these and drop the 23".

I put it back together, but I really should have cleaned the contacts in the tuner, I keep having to get up and shake the tuning knob. And here's a pic with the stand.

What a beauty.

I still think it's odd that the 19" was totally replaced by the slightly larger 19V, but that they were still making 23" tubes (calling them 22V) when these 22" tubes (21V) were only 1" smaller, yet with a wider deflection angle it made a 22" set much lighter, less deep, way earlier to move around. I've never seen a console with this tube, but I wonder why they never used them in B&W consoles in the late-60s/ 70s.

The earlier 19" CRT's, both B/W and color were 18" sets, 180 sq inches.
The last of the B/W consoles had 22V CRT's and 110 deg deflection. :scratch2:

I THINK we had these as schoolroom sets in the elementary grades.

I'm 12 or 13 years older than you. There was never a TV in the elementary or high school, I went to.
In high school, they used 16mm movies.
Ten years later, I went to tech school as part of my electrical apprenticeship, no TV's there either. :scratch2:

Well, WE had 'em, starting in the 4th grade. The Gov't had just installed WSJK TV, channel 2, the PBS station, & part of it was to "Aid the classroom teachers" w/ additional programming. None of the teachers I had ever used it very much, they'd turn it on when there was a space shot or somesuch.

I have a similar set, but mine has a 21" tube, 1966 model with the slide rule UHF tuner. Last used to watch 9-11-2001 news coverage. Tried to fire it up a month ago , but I'm getting some arcing around the HV rectifier socket, need to get it cleaned out, it was covered in what looks like old cigarette tar..

We had TVs in my grammar school.

My teachers rarely used them either. Except for space shots, badly written anti-drug programs, or once, game 7 of the World Series.

I'm not sure by any means, but I think Doug (VK member drh4683) is feeding the set from cable, with the VHF and UHF channel selectors set on UHF and channel 83 respectively (where they might have been set when he got the TV). The screen is showing an image from WWME-TV 23, the MeToo affiliate in Chicago. I don't think this channel is broadcasting NTSC OTA anymore, although I could be wrong; that is why I said the TV is probably on cable and receiving the station that way. I believe Chicago only has one or possibly two UHF NTSC stations left, WWME-TV and one other on channel 26, although, again, I am by no means certain. :scratch2: Doug would know much more about this than I would. The only reason I know anything at all about the Chicago stations I mentioned is because I do a lot of research on these and other out-of-town stations on Google; living 30 miles from Cleveland, I have no way of getting those channels OTA or even on local cable except for WGN America, which is in fact on Time Warner Cable.

Channels 70-83 (before DTV) were used for land-mobile and other services from 1970 on, and are vacant today. I remember a PBS station in northwestern Ohio that was on channel 70 in the '60s, but that station moved to a much lower channel shortly after signing on for the first time. The first TV station in Youngstown, Ohio also began in 1953 on channel 73, moving to channel 21 several years later.

You really went to a high-class school! Sport coats or blazers, dress shirts and neck ties. Quite a dress code! :scratch2:

No, it was a generic Catholic parish "prison" school. Staffed with angry nuns and civilian teachers, armed with rulers to hit you with. The sort of school George Carlin used to talk about :thumbsdn:

I liked my Catholic school a lot better than the public school, plus we were at least two grades, more advanced. They had mostly nuns and only one lay teacher. It was a small school, so the grades were doubled up. I got smacked, here and there, as I was a bit of a smart*ss.
