Then activate the tape monitor to switch in the attenuator. Resistors would be in the kohm range. I didn't even think of that, it does, and I have a cassette deck with a level adjust. If I put in a blank tape and hit record but not play, it'll attenuate its own output back to the receiver without actually recording. And I get fancy VU meters to boot as well.

This works perfectly. Thanks for the idea!
