Is that breadbox shaped thing in the above shot on the upper left a radio or a UHF converter? Whatever it is, it looks pretty beefy....

Wow Rob, if I had the Magnavox, I'd slip that Garrard into a period correct base, and stick its Webster changer back in it. The Airline's changer shows up on the VM site. Here's my next to my last console:

kam, the breadbox thing is a am radio/ 78 only phono combo. i have aboud a dosen of these. it needs a cap job cause all it dose is hum.

My Early American Astro has a good sound, unfortunately it needs a cartridge and the tape input/output needs work. I can play CDs through it with a transmitter in the meantime. I have a French Provincial in the same spot right now, with the last model of the sharp pot metal arms and charcoal grey paint. The player on that was fantastic, just three months into ownership, it needs cleaning and lubing. First real Micromatic failure I've ever had:tears:.

Let me admit before I begin....I don't have any actual consoles.
What I do have, however, are pulled amps from Motorola consoles. A pair of hs-619 amps to be exact. Bought them from an AK member. Completely rebuilt and refurbished. They're my first tube amps and....wow. I used to think consoles had crappy sound systems in them, the Moto amps have REALLY changed my opinion of them. Excellent, solid amp design. A real joy to listen to. I can't embed the pictures as I don't remember the filenames, however, they're in a folder on my www... http://dewdu.de/moto-amps |
Wow, Relaximus, what beautiful (and many!) consoles. Looks like a showroom, and they're all in top notch looking shape. Thanks for the pix.
|
Thank you for the kind word Reece. I've been quite fortunate to have obtained some true survivors. Most of these have come from the home of their original owner. All but the '63 Motorola have been recapped and get regular use. As much as I enjoy listening to my various stereo systems, there is something I find very comforting in the sound of an old console. It tends to transport me back to my childhood.

Almost forgot to post the latest edition. This one needs a bit of love. And yes, at > 68" long it's a beast!
1967 Zenith YT960 http://www.videokarma.org/attachment...1&d=1326486954 http://www.videokarma.org/attachment...2&d=1326486954 http://www.videokarma.org/attachment...3&d=1326486954 http://www.videokarma.org/attachment...4&d=1326486954 http://www.videokarma.org/attachment...5&d=1326486954 At some point, it will hopefully look similar to this: http://www.videokarma.org/attachment...6&d=1326487056 Dave |
that pop up reel to reel is awesome - never seen anything like it

Hey Dave; What Changer is on the 56 Futura. The Cabinet looks a lot like my 51 Coronet.

My research says that it's a Webcor Magic Mind TT equipped with a GE VRII cartridge. I still need to find the little red knob for the stylus selector. Dave |

Relaximus, that Zenith is a great piece and so is the Motorola. Does that have the 2 6BQ5 (center channel amp) just for the low freq?
I attached a photo of my friend's Zenith, a cousin to yours. Attachment 173337 Attachment 173338 My RCA speaker has a 15" woofer, I need to find the HiFi half .:scratch2: Attachment 173339 Attachment 173341 |

My 1962 Italian made Philco Windsor console stereo, this beast has a Graetz OEM chassis, goodmans speakers and a Lenco L70 turntable with a Shure magnetic cartridge (originally used a Ronette Binofluid crystal cartridge, i had to replace it as it skipped even with a new stylus)
Needless to say it sounds great... not much top end since the speaker system lacks a real tweeter. but VERY warm and pleasant http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/5674/philco2.jpg http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/3533/img1029wu.jpg http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/6471/img1033x.jpg http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/3121/img1028jp.jpg |

GE Musaphonic Console
Purported to be a 1949 model, this will be joining my console collection later this month. Does anyone know anything about these? The one thing that confuses me a bit is its lack of FM. All of the print ads I've seen tout this as having FM. Also, does anyone know who may have made the dual-tonearm phonograph?
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/5449/dsc4227o.jpg http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/5869/dsc4216e.jpg http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/2441/dsc4214q.jpg http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/4184/dsc4224t.jpg http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/2870/dsc4225.jpg http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/4830/207570.jpg Dave |
The thicker arm is likely a record cutter arm for recording. That is the case for mose phonographs (though there are some dual arm philcos and zeniths where the extra arm is for LPs)
That cabinet style could be a holdover from before the ad and before they started putting in FM tuning as a standard(if that is the case yours could predate the ad). Just my 0.02$ |
I think you may be right. Zooming in on the picture reveals this:
http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/2903/buttonsu.jpg Notice the word RECORD on the left-hand knob. Also, the left-most preset is labeled PHONO./F.M. ?EC. It's looking more and more like that 2nd arm is a cutter. Dayum, I can't wait for this thing to arrive! Also, any ideas on what wood the cabinet is made from? Dave |
I bet they didnt sell many FM models at first. Around here, we had no FM until the early 1960's.
My grandparents had a complete set of National Geographics up through the late 1970's. Loved all the print ads there for the Musaphonics. They looked so regal! Look forward to seeing what would make me want to own one... Interior pictures... Bruce |
The cabinet is by Baker, a very respectable firm. I can't wait until you get it either, it looks like it would blow the house down.
|
betcha a doughnut it reads F.M. TEL.(short for television). It was a popular marketing gimmick before the war to sell radio consoles as being TV ready. It probably has a connector on the back to connect an FM tuner, TV audio feed, or any other device that outputs an audio signal.
|
Well, the mystery of the 2nd tone arm is solved. I received this email from the lady I'm getting it from:

To say that I am obsessed with finding information about this thing before it arrives would be an understatement. I think I may have found it here on RadioMuseum.org, listed as a 1942 model having the extremely rare JM-1C changer/recorder.

:banana:This is going to be something different!

The down side if it is a 1942 model is the possibility of only having the pre-war FM (FM really changed freqs in 1941 because of TV taking over it's old spectrum). There are ways of getting pre-war FM sets to work (some good threads here about that too), but it can be a hassle. |
Well, I got some more pics. Turns out that it is a Model 60!

You know we are all hating you, with love, right now. We all want this thing.
That said, I can't wait to see it when you get it into your hands!!! Bruce |
Dang, you done real good!

PIcked up this '58 Fisher C-800 Contemporary on Saturday. These pics were taken when I first unloaded it. I hadn't had a chance to clean it up yet and it's obvious the dial lights need to be replaced. Other than that, it works quite well and handily bests my '56 Fisher Custom Futura in sound quality.
