Hows about a few chassis pictures ? Maybe we could ID it.
Could be it never worked, not rare on kits. We wouldnt touch one even if it worked fine. Definitely get the 6GF7 lit up before doing anything else. Oh if its on a PCB watch for poor grounds too. Usually where the PCB solders to the steel chassis. 73 Zeno:smoke: |
I'll do that in a couple days. Out of a clear blue sky, my two boys, ages 11 and 14, have decided they want to get into TV and radio restoration like their dad and seem to have a voracious appetite for it. My 14 year old just recapped a Bendix 636C radio, and my 11 year old decided that he wants to take on restoring this Admiral 10" console that I was going to use for parts. I gotta say, these kids have some soldering skills....their work is pretty darn neat :)
We'll see if this lasts, but based on the last week, it just might. I think they're burned out of video games and are looking for a new outlet. Nick, my 11 year old, soldering iron in hand, said "you know Dad, now I get why you do this. This is FUN." :D |
There were a few Tech Schools, like the Conar, advertising kit TVs.
NRI in Scranton and Bell and Howell in Chicago. Once it works, an RCA design that is hand-wired has to be an improvement. |

That's cool that the kids are wanting to get involved! My interest in TV and electronics came form watching our TV repair man(who was a family friend0 work on our CTC-40 (normally a bad power switch, and a UHF tuner or two as Youngstown has no VHF stations) Next get them started on old cars :)

99% of the time one end of the filament goes to ground.
If on a PCB GND usually tied to chassis by the board being soldered in. If a kit may use nuts, bolts & star washers or jumper wires to main chassis. Cold joints very possible either place & the socket pins. If hand wired it may use twisted pair. Most the time brown or green wires used for filament. If miswired just follow the hot end from a near by tube, put in a clip lead to get the 6.3VAC to the 6FG7. Use meter to be sure you are jumping the right voltage ! There were a few sets with most filaments in series & a few in parallel, Maggy IIRC. If so watch for fuse or fusable links. 73 Zeno:smoke: |

Cars took me a lot longer to learn - had to blow an engine before I really got into them.. Back to the thread - there is a 1966 Conar Catalog online, but has only a B/W set. National Technical School was another school that had a kit TV, but they are sparse with details in the ads in magazines. CIE and CREI didn't offer any TV courses, and Bell and Howell offered up a tube B/W set, and later, a Heathkit solid state 23 or 25" set. Can't find any Arkay kit info. FYI, most 1960's electronics magazines are on the web, and the entire Popular Mechanics/Popular Science library is on Google Books in "full" view. www.americanradiohistory.com has most of the 60s Electronics Magazines online, save for PF Reporter and Electronic Servicing. Those "Radio Electronics" magazines have Jack Darr's TV repair columns, and lots of ads for schools, kits, parts and more! Cheers, |
I suspect this was a correspondence radio and TV repair school kit myself. Likely a NRI Conar, Bell & Howell, or similar which used an RCA or heavily RCA influenced chassis. Interesting set, would be neat to see it play again.

Tech is a big thing now with almost everything we have or do involves technology of some sorts, our children are growing up using computers and tables on an almost daily basis. My 5 year old daughter uses a Kindle fire in her classroom as a go along e reader.. very impressive when she can sit down, get on the Internet and go to a game website or go to youtube and click on one of her favorite cartoons. It seems like just yesterday she was standing up using the tuner knob to hold herself up and pulled the power knob to turn on my old CTC-17. Our kids need to learn this stuff. Soldering and board troubleshooting and repair. I'm teaching them all I can. |
On the filament not lighting up, I have a magnavox combo unit that has a flaky vertical oscillator to e socket. Every once In a while I lose vertical deflection. I used deoxit and resoldered all pins on the socket. Problem solved. Check grounds!

Last night I showed Nick how to do the filter cans from underneath on the 1948 twin chassis Admiral 10" console he's restoring. He got a few of them done before I ran out of caps :sigh:
He's got all of the bypass caps done. Doing a damn good job too. His plan is to have the set done over next weekend so he can do another. We'll see what happens. I am DEFINITELY making a youtube video of this one :) |

I would recommend removing all this talk and photos (:eek:) of children performing dangerous tasks. I'm not saying that I will alert the authorities, but someone just lurking and reading threads might.
Children should be shielded from such danger. At a minimum the child in the photos should be wearing a helmet, safety glasses, knee pads, shin guards, etc. I once had a drip of solder splash on a bare shin, and it hurt very badly. Better that children should watch instructional internet videos and not allowed to to use actual tools until well into their college years. :thmbsp: Encouraging an interest in eco-unfriendly hobbies should be discouraged. It's horrifying to see such a young person turning wrenches (yeach!) on a non-hybrid, fossil fuel car. Hopefully there will be therapy. Instead I would steer a child towards an interest in more useful careers, such as a deep knowledge of dinosaurs or methods of urban-farming hemp to produce sustainable cloth for processing in economically depressed regions. As you can see, these children wear helmets. The pincushion transformer pictured has a Warwick Electronics part number. With the "80-" prefix, it identifies it as a transformer. It would be interesting to see the part number on the Vertical output transformer and the audio output transformer - the transformer complement would lead to a Sears/Warwick chassis schematic (528.XXXXX chassis). Thordarson has a neat matrix that shows transformer part numbers vs. chassis. Could be useful.
It's not a ATR, Conar, or Heathkit, so maybe NTS, Devry?? Even Andrea, with their chassis that could be slipped into a custom cabinet, didn't use Warwick parts. One thing is for sure - that is one puzzling TV chassis. Cheers, |

It WILL help them and get them a lot more interested in technical things.... If...and it is a big IF..my health recovers and things change in a major way for me financially...I DO want to help young people who have a technical desire--to not "slip through the cracks" ...As I did so many times...due to so many short-sighted people... |

I just got done fixing my father in laws Vizio 47" flatscreen again.. Bad fuse on the mainboard from it not used to "getting a break" for three years straight running, except today when it was unplugged due to reflooring the house, plugged back in and after a few minutes of me reconnecting the cable tv for him the tv went dead. Vizio's are crap, long story short my daughter watched me do it the whole time and was interested the whole time. She even helped screw back on the back panel. Kamikari, did you look into that frankenset any further? |

Dropped out, took an assy job & a year later production manager. At lowest part of economy some Chinamen started coming around. Put in apps & had 3 companies bidding for him. Now makes 3 times what I ever did. It took 4 yrs............ At the risk of straying further off topic, which I admit I may have caused, I hope I didn't touch any raw nerves by making fun of the American (perhaps worldwide?) obsession with dinosaurs. It simply irritates me because "dino-knowledge"; while utterly useless for 98% of the public, has become a go-to, safe subject replacing mechanical interests for children so predisposed. As a child, I grew up with immigrant, depression-era adults who were intelligent, but had no clue what was popular for children in the mid 80s. That seems to be about the era when this push for the natural-world vs. man-made world began. Rather than using primitive spell-checks or speak & spells, I was forced to look up any word I misspelled in this old-timey thing called a "dictionary". Said dictionary was embossed with my grandmother's name as 1938 Detroit Spelling Bee champion, so you might imagine that poor spelling and grammar were not tolerated. I learned multiplication tables from flash cards. The only worthwhile public education I received came from my oldest teachers, the rest came at home. Non-academic subjects were the domain of my grandfather. We didn't study dinosaurs. We fixed cars, lawn mowers, bikes, television sets & radios. We poured cement, finished basements, installed toilets, added electrical outlets, etc. I knew how to use a magnesium float before my friends could ride a bike. I learned all of this during the time my friends raised by hippie parents were watching MTV, listening to rock & roll, learning about dinosaurs and overall becoming good consumers of crap imported by the cargo-ship load. As such, I find myself rather out-of-step with people of my generation. My sarcasm isn't always understood. When I see a kid who can do something useful at a young age, I tend to be shocked... but in a good way. It gives me a shot of hope for the future. |

Sadly Carmine, there are a lot of parents with that mentality (heck my dads folks would not let him try to repair a radio as a kid because it 'could be dangerous'), and those that raise their kids like that are what is filling our world with "middle men and phone washers" rather than "thinkers and doers" (hitchiker's guide to the galaxy quotes)...
If not for taking on this hobby at an early age I'm sure I would not be an electrical engineering major (well on his way to graduation)...It's scary to think about how I'd have likely turned out without my hobbies. |
I'm glad Carmine was just being the anti-repair guy. Had me going there for a minute.
I started messing around with old radios around 1963, when I was seven. I replaced a picture tube in a B/W GE console when I was nine, with my dad's help... he helped me sit the CRT in the mask properly, then I took over. Started doing basic TV repairs for friends of our family when I was eleven. Got a parts account at the local electronic parts jobber when I was fourteen. Got a $40 car, a 1960 Dodge, and learned from it by taking it apart and putting it back together again. Today I do almost all of my own auto repair. My mom loves this, as she has never had to take a car to the shop with ME around. If it had not been for my dad, and my uncle Wayne showing me the basic ways to use tools, and work on electrical things, I sincerely don't know what I would have wound up doing for a living for all of my work career. |
I really wish that had been my case.
But MY dad was in sales--and He DIED--when I was 7 years old. This left my mom to take care of me and my sis. she di her best and I am very proud of her. She did her best to understand--and tolerate--my special interests. However--some people who COULD have helped me to learn more--and even get into this field early--did NOT help me. At least one was a tv repair man, and for a VERY short time--it looked like he would "take me under his wing" , but he did NOT do so. Another was heavily into computer technology--he too had a chance--but passed on it for whatever reason. A few even tried to PREVENT me from doing this sort of thing--trying their best to convince my mother to force me to "stop messing around with old tv sets and such". For a short time--they nearly succeeded. But after a short time--mom realized better. So--I am m mostly self--taught. I had a BIT of help, here and there, but nothing consistent. Then I earned 2 degrees in college--one of which--my AAS degree--HAS helped me to 'get in doors".. |

Everything has continuity that should, with the tube pulled from the socket of course. Powered the set up and with the tube elevated slightly in the socket, I get squat for voltage on 4 and 5. Nothing.

Perhaps *really* clean the tube socket pins well. Can you prop the chassis up slightly and try to measure the voltage at the bottom of the socket? * Is it a wired or printed circuit connection from the tube base to the source of heater voltage? I assume that you are indeed counting the pins correctly and the correct tube is installed.
jr edit add: * perhaps tack solder a couple of wires to the socket, and bring out for measurement? |
