Anybody???

Well anyways, I did not crank the HV adjuster up. But with some messing around I found that my full bright picture comes back with some tapping around the HV box, sometimes it will stay, sometimes it dissapear again. When it would come back from a tap, it would also start sizzling again....umm is this what I'm thinking it may be, a bad flyback???...

Some help/guidance needed here guy's....

Odds are it is something like a break in the H out tube top cap wire in the cap, similar break in the HV rect top cap wire, socket contacts, etc. In a HV system an open like that may sort of fix it's self by arcing over the break.....If in knocking on it the break shrinks enough to arc over like I think it is, then all you need to do is find it and fix it.

Arcing usually not equal to bad fly. Arcing is usually insulation failure, dirt forming a conductive path, or an open connection that should not be open. Dead fly usually equals no HV to arc.

Well, I had some time yesterday to poke and prod around with it. Found that everything attached to the back of the fly is good, but tapping on the HV tube would intermittently bring the pic back and off again. There's also a slight chance at a breakage in the wire going from the top of the HV tube to the flyback as well, because it came back when I played with that some.
I still havnt found where that snap comes from. It will only do that (and sizzle) when the CRT is lit. It did it once in the first 10 minutes but I didn't see it and it wouldn't do it again in 30 or so more that it was on.
I think though, that my sizzle may be corona...(on the crt)I'm not sure why because the anode connection was clean, but that's where it sounds like its coming from when the back is off.
I was also wondering, can a HV rectifier tube cut out intermittently and be linked to my issues. When I had it out of the set there was a chunk of something that was just flopping around inside as well...

Well, I'm figuring my HV tube was bad/intermittent. It looked odd, can't actually test it though, it's not in my tube tester's book.
Well, after an issue with trying to purchase a good tube I finally got 1 and my full bright raster is back!
No more dark/no raster that only flashes momentarily when brightness is played with. Now I just need to find something to hook it up too and play for awhile too make sure no other issues are going to pop up.

Well, late last night I got the chance to run it for awhile. Hooked it up to the NES and played it for little over an hour. No issues! Nothing odd happened after warm up or anything! No weird sounds... Just have to make a few final adjustments and it should be good to go for awhile.

I have yet to find any vintage color tvs around my area (no portacolors or anything) It was just dumb luck that I came across an extremely rare Philco Townhouse 19" B & W TV at the antique mall the other day for $15. :scratch2:

I don't know if ya read my story at the beginning of this thread, but this one was luck as well. I just happened to know exactly what it was, from a picture only showing the back. This set would probably be in the trash or grossly overpriced in some antique/junk shop if I didn't pick it up. That's a nice set you found, and for real cheap at an antique mall! Last antique tv I saw at an antique mall/shop was an abused Emerson table top from '53 that was overpriced at around $100! :yikes:

Welp, back to the Porta-color. Played my SNES on it for about 2-1/2 to 3 hour's this afternoon/evening. Ran good, but when hot, the picture shrunk a bit on the top and bottom. Had 1/4" black bars along the top and bottom. I don't know if I should worry about this or just not care.:scratch2: Also noticed, when paused the picture has a slight wavy flag effect. Should I worry about my e-caps because of this?:worried: I think i've read somewhere here that, that is a sign of faulty e-caps...

I have no idea because I have very little experience with working on color tvs older than 1980s I actually had gotten a couple of 1980s vintage color sets from my high school that I went to, one of them being a 1987 vintage 25" Panasonic TV that wouldn't power on anymore (it was set up in the PE office at the school and the plug had a chair shoved up against it with the plug partially bent out of the wall) so I had asked if i could take it home and monkey around with it and my PE teacher said I could but I should probably ask the principal just in case, and so I did and he said go ahead because we don't have any use for a TV that isn't working, so at parent teacher conferences my dad and I loaded the TV up into the back of the van and I took it home with me and opened it up (because I suspected from the fact that the cord was bent up like it was with a metal chair leg up against it that it had a blown fuse) and sure enough the fuse was blown and I replaced it with a new fuse and powered it on and sure enough it worked again, and that TV worked for a couple of years until I accidentally shorted it out when I was trying to make some slight picture adjustments.)
The other TV I got was a late 1980s 25" Sony Trinitron TV that was a stereo MTS enabled unit but only had one built in speaker and had a full set of AV jacks on the back and on screen display that I ended up giving to a friend of mine who used it until the the built in speaker went out and then he ended up throwing it out. And the other TV I got from my high school was another 25" Panasonic, this one being from around 1990 and it had on sceen programming and everying and its original remote and I ended up giving it to another friend of mine to use and they are still using it to this day.

As for the Philco Townhouse its mostly up and running except needing to redo the aquadag coating on the back of the picture tube and replacing some capacitors in the vertical output/amplifier stage.
