Well its finally gone, with a filthy picture drawn in marker on the screen and an interesting plot-twist:
Saw some huge signs around town advertising free e waste recycle at our local BIGLOTS parking lot.. (sat-sun 9a-4p) Went there with 4tvs loaded in the van at 10am.... NO ONE THERE... Ended up dropping them at a local recycler nearby... Later saw 2 big trucks there in the lot at 11am when i was running errands..(they were late) Sunday came along and i noticed NOTHING in the lot on Sunday while i was at BIGLOTS... Turns out, they were MORE interested in computers and cellphones than any other e waste, so the BIGLOTS manager kicked them off the property... Basicly, small time data miners posed as an e-waste collection business... I give em credit, they went all out on advertising :thmbsp: So beware folks when dumping your unwanteds... And if VK moderators need extra data space for the site, feel free to delete this thread, the tv in question wont be getting fixed anytime soon.. :D SR |
Shucks, I was hoping to hear about the fireball caused by dumping it in to the volcano. :D
I make a habit of opening my computers and keeping the hard drive to reuse, or opening the drive and smashing the discs/chips to pieces....If I'm giving one away I format the drive then completely fill it with garbage data (such as tube data sheets) then delete the garbage data permanently.... Most data miners don't want to invest 6+ figures into data recovery of an unknown. Of course few computers leave my hands whole...I keep recycling each component into new systems till they die or are no longer up to acceptable specs. |
A bit late to the party, but I was going to say LCD tvs use high voltage fluorescent backlights, the pop you were hearing was likely a bad fluorescent tube causing the HV to be discharged elsewhere (as the power supply turned on), I've seen them arc through the paper-thin wire insulation to whatever source of ground they can find. And immediately after it arc-ed, the power supply probably noped out until its programming said it was ok to try again.
