I mean that the pattern may change during one frame so each pixel averages to the correct value, and therefore no pattern would be visible to the eye or to a long exposure.

So, 8 photos. 2 sets. All paused. First set, 4 photos from Oz. Second set, 4 photos from Mama Mia.
First 3 photos in each set used same settings as post#39. Forth photo from each set used an exposure of 2 seconds.

The Apple TV app dims the images when paused, so the Oz photos look significantly darker. The darkened paused Mia photos from the modern film is not as apparent.

Pattern shows up in the first 3 photos taken sequentially in both sets. Pattern is gone in forth photo of each set. Spots appear in the 2 second Oz exposure, and no spots in the Mia exposure.

I wonder why the spots on the long exposure? If you watched the documentary about the restoration, they painstakingly removed dirt from the Oz film. Dirt on my camera sensor? The 2 second long exposure shots look blurry.

Edit: With a magnifier, I see no pattern on the OLED screen. So I guess I was wrong about the pattern being the OLED pixels.

Look at the unbuttoned shirt button, and you see a change in the pattern from shot to shot, so yes, duty cycle modulation (dithering) as suspected.

Regarding the dirt spots - very likely on your sensor, and thrown out of focus when you use short shutter speed and wide aperture. What were the apertures for the short exposures vs. the long exposure?

You could refine the experiment by exposing for 1/60 second and 1/30 second to see if the pattern integrates out in one field or one frame.

Took up Wayne’s suggestion.

#1 SS1/30 No pattern!
#2 SS 1/60 No pattern!
#3 SS 1/160 Pattern
#4 SS 1/160 Pattern.

#5 is SS#1.
#6 is SS#2.
#7 is SS#3.
#8 is SS#4.

The SS’s with the patterns look better and more in focus to my eye on my high resolution iPad with DCI P3 color gamut.

Excellent!

The pattern creates artificial high spatial frequencies (sharp differences between adjacent pixels) (aliasing) that are not in the source, so there is an impression of sharpness, but it's due to false detail that sometimes falls symmetrically about an edge and sometimes distorts the position of the edge. So, it is both sharper and distorted. The fact that it's a grid pattern and is finer than detail in the original, apparently prevents it from forming obvious jaggies, but it really is just another form of artifact.

I’m teaching myself to shoot and process RAW files. We found an app that allows my iPhone X to shoot JPEG and TIFF files simultaneously, and with Lightroom, was able to render these five OLED images from our LG E8. My first foray into photo editing. There is much to learn and haven’t looked at color channels, tone mapping etc. I’ve noticed increased grain that’s hard to remove, but came out okay. The images are from a Netflix series Bridgeton in 4K Dolby Vision HDR. Tiff rendering has opened my eyes to what we’ve been missing. Big difference in quality. I’m a believer.

The only reason I’m not using my Sony A6300 is because of trouble transferring Tiff files from camera to iPad. Links are higher resolution.

Very nice. When you use compressed files instead of raw, the compression may accidentally remove some noise along with detail that you would like to have. The uncompressed TIF file will carry both noise and detail, so you have a chance to try reducing the noise with post processing. This may reduce detail somewhat also, but it will be controlled and not accidental.

In the first photo, the white door was washed out, the panels were barely visible prior to editing. The edit brought detail below the mantel and details within the bright sun in the rug. With the museum shot, I tried to remember the lighting in museums we visited. Had the opportunity to visit the Louvre and the areas were darkened with the artwork prominently illuminated. With the carriage shot, looking at the jpeg, I didn’t know the scene was shot in the late afternoon, also the blacks are not crushed and the white horse is not clipped.
