in 1904 each county were given one or two letters, & numbers from 1 to 9999 for their plates I.E. London was given A & the first number plate was A1, then went up to A 9999 then to next letter combination. My home county of Nottinhamshire had AU TO VO NN, Derbyshire had R RA RB CH & so on. In the 1930's the one & two letter combinations were running out, so the put a letter in front of the two letter combinations so you'd have AAU 1 to AAU 999, the single letters were not used anymore. This system started to run out in the 1950's so they reversed the system, so you had up to 3 numbers (or 4 for one & two letter combinations) & one two or three letters, my uncle had 2766 R (this would be worth many thousands of pounds now) & Dads was 520 AAU. This system started to run out in 1963, so a new system that was 3 letters & up to 3 numbers then a letter on the end that changed every year staring with A for 1963 then B for 1964 & so on. My motor bike was AVO 15B & my first car GAY 585B, this system ran out in 1984 & was reversed starting with A, one of my Father-in-laws car was A46 ACH, one of my cars was H41 VAU. This system ran out in 2001, the present system is an area letter (Nottingham my local area is F) then a random letter, the if registered between March & September the number is the year, if registered from Septl to Feb the number is the year + 50, so the car I bought new in September 2006 was FE56 EOC, my present car I bought in March 2017 is FE17 UGZ. Norther Ireland has a different system, their plates have three letter with an I or Z in the & up to four numbers, they have no year number or letter, many taxis & buses have these plates to hide their age . British number plates are quite complicated & a lot of Brits don't understand how they work...

They get a garage to make up mock plates that you can design yourself, (many people have their name or house number put on a real looking plate for show) then put it on the car themselves. Our friend Lisa has the real plates in her garage, I predict she's going to get herself nicked by the cops & be fined & have the plates confiscated, I'll post on her if/when it happens, lol...

You used to have to have a paper road tax disc in the windscreen, this had the expiry date on it & had to be renewed every 6 or 12 months, woe betide you if the cops spotted a missing or expired tax disc. Nowadays (since 5 years ago) you still have to pay road tax but there's no tax disc to put in your windscreen, the cops know if you've paid or not by taking a picture of your number plate on their cellphone or their car video camera & sending it to the cops central computer, they also have fixed roadside cameras, these also know if you're MOT'd & insured, big brother is watching...

In Illinois when I was a kid in addition to the state plate sticker some towns had their own town window sticker that they wanted you to pay for once every year or 2...

YAY my car has passed it's first MOT (a yearly roadworthy test you need here in England for cars 3 years or older) with no advisories (for minor faults that are not serious enough to fail the test) so feeling rather pleased. MOT runs out on 13'th March 2021, the MOT was actually due on 14'th March as that was date when I bought the car new 3 years ago, but you're allowed to take your car for it's MOT up to 1 month before the cars 3 year anniversary or before the old MOT runs out. The cops know if you don't have a valid MOT, insurance or yearly road tax & it flags up on their car computer. You see cop documentaries on TV & their car computer goes "DING DING DING" then they chase after the un taxed/un MOT/un insured car & the driver gets a ticket & the car is usually towed to the pound...

So does that mean they upgrade Kia driver's cars to POW status, or do they fill the interior with stray dogs and let them chew their frustrations away? :scratch2: :D

I'm god would be banned here in England, lol... All plates here have to have at least one letter & one number e.g. A 1, 9 R etc. The single letter single number plates were issued over a hundred years ago, & the single number single letter plates in the 1950's & 60's & those that are still around are worth tens of thousands of pounds. A local car has 72 R & my old boss has 11 FR. I think 72 R is the lowest single letter plate I've seen. I'd love a single letter plate but can't afford one, my uncle had two cars with single letter (both four numbers R) plates but scrapped them both, I expect the scrap man sold them. Dad had an unusual plate = GWA 1C, any plate with a single number is worth something nowadays, but he scrapped the car along with the plate..

The top 2 are from 1922 about 98 years old! I rescued them from a garage that was being torn down for a doctors office back in about 1962. I was 10 years old! And I have saved them ever since.
The Charleston plates are a little newer and were issued by the local municipality.
Others include my ham plate for my first call letters. At that time ham plates were FREE. But these days they charge for them (about $80 I think).
And a "Hobby/Antique" plate that I had for my Gremlin.

Austrian Pre War Number Plates
 

Nice posts, but I guess I'm not over doing things saying my grandfather's Austrian pre war DKW motor cycle number plates are one or at least two of the rarest things you will ever see in your whole live- the rest of the poor motorbike and so much more got lost in WWII:

The shown number plates are very early postwar from the russian zone in lower Austria. Even though the number plates are not prewar, the are extremely rare in any case.

The upper left thing is the leftover of the backlite. The two smaller ones are from mounting screws I guess.

Been in the media here in England that electric cars will have green registration plates to show their green credentials, they'll be exempt from London congestion charges & be able to use bus lanes. Whether they'll be green letters/numbers on a white background (like Florida plates) or black letters/numbers on a green background they have not said. How this'll work with the yellow back plates we have at the moment I don't know, the green wouldn't show up very well on a yellow background. It's all up in the air at the moment because of Covid19 chaos though, see what happens in the future...

The way I read it in the media I thought the plates would be green, but no just a green flash... Don't think I'll be going electric anytime soon, I go hundreds of miles to Southampton, Portsmouth, Hastings, Blackpool & Harrogate on a regular basis so I would get range anxiety...

I wonder if they sold the Chevy Volt over there? It was a plug in electric with a small gasoline engine onboard that could be used to extend the range indefinitely after the batteries got low. Good car for that sort of application.

BMW used to make the i3 with range extender. A little bike engine with a battery charger. Also known as a series hybrid configuration. They have now stopped making it and only do the pure electric version.

The green plates will only be for pure electric vehicles. Though I wonder if there will be aftermarket charger sets you can carry in the boot (trunk for you guys in the US).

I suppose you could cart one of those Honda petrol (gasoline) generators that they use on market stalls around in your boot (trunk) with a piece of pipe to extend the exhaust outside the car & trickle charge the batteries. Not sure what the cops would say though. Would be a thing Mr Bean would do if the program was still made, lol...

My dad got it instantly, and chuckled. Tried to explain to me the ones on the family room wall. I can't keep 'em straight, other than he's been out west a few times for 'em, and there's one tag he keeps putting in for and never gets.

I have one of his elk skulls at my house as a (temporary) display piece in the stereo room, one of the others is in their family room. We found pictures of (what we believe to be) his first white tail, in '58. Rifle shot. I think part of the skull is still in the family room by the fireplace.

He disavows all knowledge of bow hunting, other than he thinks he bought his at Abercrombie and Fitch (yes kids, THAT one), and is a little dissapointed I came home empty handed this year, but understands this was more logistical and getting experience

I should have known that ovis is a sheep. I took Latin for 3 years in HS but its been a long time ago.

There was a big ooh-ahh going on in our local newspapers & local TV stations that a man got a 60 pounds parking ticket: He was stopped for 16 seconds at a give way (yeald) sign at a T junction waiting for a gap in the traffic & a CCTV camera van clocked him & thought he was parked & issued the fine by post. They eventually canceled the fine after many months of appeals & wrangling...

My neighnour who put petrol (gas) in his diesel car has now got an all electric Tesla, & it has a green flash on it's number plates. He's waiting for the electric company to install a high power car charging station but they can't do it for a few weeks, so he's having to use the public chargers in supermarket car parks till then. He had a panic last weekend when he went to pick his daughter up from 60 miles away & had 11% of charge left when he got home, it was fairly hot (for England that is) so he had the air con on all the time....

1 of my friends has an electric car..... We always find a charging station to charge it up at.........
