It's a beautiful 80F day so I'm out doing more cabinet work.
First, Mohawk Brown Mahogany toner lacquer followed by precat clear gloss. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...4601e0c5_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...30ba54f0_c.jpg Then on to cabinet repairs. Clamping some separated veneer and cleaning the rest. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c9abfffd_c.jpg These little plugs cover holes for adjustments. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e0bc29c6_c.jpg Not sure what to do about this damage on top. I think some moisture was trapped under the glass top and caused some lacuqer to lift. I guess I'll try to wick in some Howards RAF and reflow. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1a789288_c.jpg |
Got one side done before losing daylight.
Lightly sanded/scraped off defects like paint splatters. Wiped down with mahogany stain. Clear coated with lacquer. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5cba31a6_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1540d8f1_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f99518ae_c.jpg |
Squeezing in a little more work before the rain and cold weather return this afternoon.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...46549eb7_c.jpg Funny, I never noticed the GAROD below the dial scale until now. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b49808c4_c.jpg Struggling a bit to get the dual speakers out as the screws have rusted. It's been suggested that I may be able to flip the metal grille screen around to reveal a pristine surface. We shall see. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9718dd22_c.jpg Just starting on the top as rain clouds roll in. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...0b3191c7_c.jpg |
Looking good. Does it not have an AGC?
You have a screenshot of John Williams from an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents? I wonder how many remember him in the Columbia House 120 Musical Masterpieces ads in the 1970's? "I'm sure you recognise this lovely melody as 'Stranger in Paradise'. But did you know that the original theme is from the Polovetsian Dance No. 2 by Borodin? So many of the tunes of our well-known popular songs were actually written by the great masters—like these familiar themes..." |
Again the Garod is looking really nice. Do you have a pdf of the schematic you could share?
And am I the only one that remembers that John William's ad for Columbia House. It is his opening line with the Polovtsian Dance no. 2 that always makes me smile. Apparently it holds the record for being the longest running TV commercial in TV History. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXZ7HHNttm0 |
Yes, it has AGC.

Back out in the garage for another round. The clock is ticking...

Well, this was unexpected. I thought I had a 16LP4 to replace the 54 degree 15AP4 on the left, but I was wrong.
What I do have is a 70 degree 16WP4. While it could probably be made to work, I'll try to get a 16LP4 from the TV museums stash. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...df1f075e_c.jpg |

Yes, 16WP4

Another round out in the garage. Finished off the other side and started on the trim. Just about done :) None too soon - the convention is in 3 weeks!

While doing a final review on the chassis, I discovered a couple caps I missed including this coupling cap to the volume control.
Forget about outer foil, a grounded copper tube is how you really shield a cap :D https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f89a148b_c.jpg Final task (I hope) is to replace the crumbling wiring for HV (EHT) and yoke. I'll be glad to get this off the workbench. It's the most intensive project I've done to date. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1d463bb2_c.jpg |
My God what a colossal project and transformation! Magnum Opus Sir Robert!

Arrived at the early television museum safely and began reassembly. A rebuilt 16LP4 that tests like new has been secured :)
Phono and radio are working. Tomorrow finally assembly and adjustments. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...226f934a_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2616d3da_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...19dbd371_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...653b2bfc_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...04e2d173_c.jpg |
[QUOTE=bandersen;3263429]Arrived at the early television museum safely and began reassembly. A rebuilt 16LP4 that tests like new has been secured :)
Phono and radio are working. Tomorrow finally assembly and adjustments. Was it a CBS 16LP4A? That's what I got from them! :D Now in the box it came in, the 16FP4 (Dumont), in hope that some day, rebuilds may happen again. :tears: |
No and things did NOT go as planned. Short version is the rebuild had debris floating around inside - bits of glass and metal that marred the phosphor coating.
We had to take it all apart and install yet another 16LP4. A rebuild from Texas that was in fantastic condition. It's finally all together and working very well! Getting ready to install the first 16LP4. I believe it was all video recorded. I'll try to post the footage. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...204be2a1_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6170e69d_c.jpg Second 16LP4 being installed. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9b011cbc_c.jpg Finally! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fea2154b_c.jpg Bright overhead fluorescent lighting made photographs difficult. It really does have an excellent picture and sound. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...24bf62e6_c.jpg |
