Today's load

Brought home some good stuff today. There was a cute little RCA set that I listed in the b&w section.

But even better.... brought home tons of knobs still on the cards! I think I had 4 milkcrates of NOS knobs, and two smaller boxes of loose knobs. It seems they're from the late 40's thru early 60's. I went thru them briefly and it looks like they're mainly channel selectors and fine tuners. I sorted thru some of them and filled one milk crate with only RCA knobs. There are many RCA channel selectors similar in style to CTC7 thru 11 sets.

It will probably be at least a week before I get around to sorting them out. I think I will try boxing them by tv brand. Looks like they are mainly RCA, GE, Motorola, Crosley, Westinghouse, Admiral, and Philco. I do not recall seeing many Zenith knobs. Once I get some kind of list going, I'll let you guys know in case there's something in there ya'll can use. I'm sure there will be. At that time, I'll probably put a thread in the TV Partswap forum.

Many of the knobs on cards are quite dirty, and many with mildew. They should clean up well. Looks like those cards sat in that box for many many years before I found them.

That "Setchell Carlson" is an all tube color tv or an hybrid one? The picture tube gots "delta" or "in line" shadow mask? Uh, those "delta" picture tubes are a bigtrouble maker. :dammit:

Charlie 01-23-2005 10:30 AM

Other than the UHF tuner, this set is all tube. Looks like all the tubes in there are pretty common to what you'd find in RCA or Zenith. It appears that most of the tubes are still the original Setchell's.

Don't know much bout the CRT other than it's a 25AXP22 and the red gun's a little weak. I grabbed a spare CRT for it that tested like new.

An inspection tag inside the cabinet is dated Jan. 25, 1967.

The ETF doesn't have one. In fact their website has no reference to the K-1 whatsoever, but that doesn't necessarily mean there's none left. I found this brochure at TV history: http://www.tvhistory.tv/1955-Strombe...n-K1-Color.JPG I get the impression it was not among the first sets offered; more like by the time S-C introduced their 15" set, RCA, Motorola etc were already offering 21" sets.

A day at the shop with Polaraman

Today, I had a day spent with Polaraman. He made a trip over here to pick up the Setchel Carlson color set i saved for him. We paid a visit to a local friend and bought a truck load of Sams that he and I split up. Then, we made a run to the tv shop.

I showed him thru the attic of the old shop, and then we went rummaging thru the old warehouse across the street. It was great to have another collector come along. Having an extra pair of eyes turned out great for the both of us. He spotted many items that I had missed in the piles and on the shelves. He was like a kid in a candy store! By the time it got dark, we had his old Dodge completely loaded with stuff for the both of us! We nearly had to carry some stuff in the cab with us.

After getting back to my house and splitting the Sams between the two of us, we were able to get some bigger stuff from my garage into his truck. He's back on the highway again to make some more stops around Texas, then will be headed back to Georgia. He should be home by Monday with a full load and a very wide variety of items from here, the tv shop, and his other stops along the way.

I'm not going to tell what his list of items includes... I'll save that for him to do in a few days. Trust me though... he's gonna have plenty to keep himself busy with for a good while!!!

Rich, it was a pleasure having you here! Glad we were able to find you enough to make the long trip worth it!

The photo below is him and his faithful Dodge just before he left here. You can't see all of his goodies... much of the load is behind the two consoles and some even in the cab. At least he still has plenty of room for other goodies he'll be picking up in the next couple of days.

polaraman 02-21-2005 06:36 PM

I made it home. The truck is packed with a load of Tv goodies. :D I had to leave a few things at my garage in San Antonio. The trip was around 2,500 miles.

Had a great day with Charlie. Wished I had more time. The truck is just loaded with my stuff in the picture. We really picked up some good stuff. The tires on the beast were almost flat from the weight. :worried: Missed the huge pile in the front of the shop. It was hauled off. We can't win them all.

I will post pictures tomorrow. :naughty:

This is polaraman's truck at the end of the trip. Six cabinets of SAMS, three console and four color portable Tv sets. :D Not all of this came from the TV shop. I could have filled my truck though! The set with the back facing the picture is the modular rectangular Setchell Carlson color set. That is also now in my collection. The gold and white set w/o a back is a CTC 22 parts set. I will now be able to keep mine going for a long time.

I know the sets are rectangular but I got them at the TV shop. The set on top is a Truetone tube color portable. I got two of those with the intention of making one good set. The bottom is an Olympic CT 911 tube color portable. I really thought it was unusual set. It was face down in muck when I rescued it. The Olympic does show a picture but it does need work. I will post in the rectangular section when I begin working on it. The one Truetone has a poor picture also.

Rich...

Wow! I'm surprised you've already put the juice to those portables. You haven't hardly had enough time to get the muck off! :D Yeah guys... he wasn't joking... it was face down in the muck! :yikes:

Did you have a chance to test the crt's on the smaller sets?

That same day, I also brought home a few items. (We really had that truck loaded) Got a Motorola b/w set with a busted base. The main reason for getting this set was to pull the 21CBP4 out of it (provided it's good). I got a few small various parts. Also, I got a bunch of Sams. Basically, Rich and I bought these Sam's from a friend in Beaumont and then split them up between the two of us.

ATTN: PEVERETT I think this moto has the knobs you are looking for.

I got this table top Moto from the shop a few days before Rich got here. CRT is dead. It's pretty clean, so, if the toob in the previous set is good, it will go in this set.

Sorry for the lousy pics... still using the old camera with focus issues. :worried:

This is the time of year to be hunting old TVs-Who was it here that loaded an old radio in his van, & nearly wrecked when the 756,943 waspers came out to see what the hell was happening to their home & why was it moving?!? If anyone wants it, there is a Hornet's Nest hanging over the road at our farm that has to be the biggest one I've ever seen. Must be 3- 4' long, & at least that big around.-Sandy G.

nasadowsk 02-22-2005 08:55 PM

That one of them Mopar race to live live to race shirts with the squiggly drawn maltese cross on the back? the mopar kiddies aroun d here all haven 'em, can't seem to find them online :(

Oh yeah, what's with that chassis with the early style RCA HV box on it?

Charlie 02-22-2005 09:09 PM

In the back of the truck? oh yeah forgot all about those. Rich spotted three CTC11 chassis up on a top shelf. IIRC, two of them had missing power transformers... maybe a flyback was missing on another. Rich took those home for parts to use with his 11.

He also spotted a couple of 16 chassis in a pile. Didn't really have room in the truck for them. I will be going back tomorrow, so, I'll grab 'em.

Also gonna try to get a nice 1950's Philco b/w console. I saw it had a brightener. I'll have to dig around to find another crt for it. Where I'm gonna put it... i have no idea.

polaraman 02-22-2005 09:42 PM

NASADOWSK,

The shirt can be had at the Mopar Collectors Guide magazine web page. Free shirt with a one year susbcription.

I am fooling with the Olympic right now. Had to find a Phillips screwdriver!

If your work area is as bad as mine, finding what you need to fix the set could take longer than fixing it!

mbates14 02-22-2005 11:01 PM

HA! you should see this place. RCA2000 can vouch for that. LOL

polaraman 02-22-2005 11:02 PM

Charlie,

Organization skills are lacking here also.

All the tubes in the Olympic are good. Only had to replace A 6AQ5 and a tuner tube. Too late to attempt to power it up. The CRT is perfect!

Tiny CRT

1 Attachment(s)
Guys,

One of the items I brought home during our adventure the other day is a tiny little crt. It's a 902A. As you can see, it's pretty small. Only about 7 inches long, and the screen is roughly 1 3/4 inches in diameter. Did these have a specific use? Or can this be used as a test crt? I couldn't find any info on this number in my tube book, so, I don't know what voltage the heaters run on. Suggestions?

Eric H 02-23-2005 01:31 AM

I'm so darn jealous.

You guys are just having too much fun rooting through that old shop, wish I could be there.

RetroHacker 02-23-2005 06:16 AM

Yeah - I agree with Eric - I wish I could be there too. Nice scores!

Charlie - that has to be the most adorable little CRT I've ever seen! I have no idea what it could have been used for though, maybe it had some application as a camera viewfinder, or possibly some sort of test equipment? Could be a sample too, or some sort of promotional thing, but somehow I doubt it. I know I have seen pictures of CRT's made out of coke bottles though - from what I've read the coke bottle CRT's were made as curiosities for tours at picture tube plants and the like.

Yeah, you guys are having too much fun. Way too much fun. I wish there was some fun like that in my neck of the woods. Some people have all the luck - I'm still hunting the elusive color roundie. Sssh! Be vewy vewy qwuiet - I'm hunting wowndies. :D

Good luck on your restorations guys!

-Ian

Chad Hauris 02-23-2005 06:17 AM

Looks like an electrostatic crt for a little oscilloscope....fil is probably 6.3 volts but have not double checked it. You can hook up a filament transformer to a variac and boost the voltage slowly from zero and note how the glow appears as you monitor the voltage.

Sandy G 02-23-2005 08:31 AM

My CRT book sez its a 902, introduced in 1938,was 1st used in the RCA Model 151-2 oscilloscope. National Union also made 'em for the Navy during WW2. Doesn't have any info on voltages, except it would work down to 400 volts. You may have an oldie but a goodie...-Sandy G.

Tim 02-23-2005 12:08 PM

According to my RCA manual the 902-A is indeed a 6.3v 600ma O'Scope CRT with P1 phosphor. 2nd Anode can be 400v to 600v.

heathkit tv 02-23-2005 01:20 PM

There was (is?) someone selling a similar small tube on ePay.....except his had numbers painted on the face like a clock and there was a single clock hand that apparently could be set by hand. He didn't know what the application was, most strange! I wonder if it was either used in a lab or perhaps radar setup. Anyone recall that auction?

Charlie 02-23-2005 05:38 PM

Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like this tube has limited uses. I can either get an old oscilloscope for it (yeah right), or I can put it on a shelf for something interesting to look at. It seems that I'll be doing the latter of the two.

I did find a couple of sites that sell these on the web. Looks like they go for about 50 bucks. Probably cheaper on ebay. Oh well. I'm just gonna use it for looks. :)

I forgot about that little tube. Shipping was 15 bucks. Hope it works out good for you. I'm glad you had a use for it. No sense in letting NOS crt's going to waste! :)

Really? I thought that was about average! :D :lmao:

bgadow 02-24-2005 09:57 PM

I have a Motorola like that table model, Charlie. There has got to be some trick to pulling the chassis-all I could figure to do was to take the cabinet completely apart. Once I got it recapped it worked great.

This was a CRT that RCA brought out in the late 30's for use with CRO's & TV experaments, I remember seeing an ad for them in an old QST printed in late 1938, These crts came with either green P1 or white P4 phosphours & they were electrostatic deflection as well.

BTW, to respond to an earlier comment made here regarding SC color TV, I honestly don't believe Stromberg-Carlson made color sets (the company may have gone out of business before color really caught on) and if they did, the sets may not have sold very well. The last b&w SC console I remember seeing belonged to my aunt, who bought it in the '50s. The set had a white cabinet with doors (and Chinese accent pieces on the door pulls, IIRC) to hide the CRT.
