Here I will tell my crt bezel story. Had a late 70s XL100 with some chips in the paint so I taped it off & sprayed the faceplate. Looked great. But...I guess because I did it with the set together there wasn't enough of a gap between the crt & faceplate. So anytime you touched that bezel you got one heck of a static shock!

How do you work with this heavy CRT? My Felton is a metal cabinet with wood-colored vinyl over it. I'd like to remove the CRT, but I have never handled a heavy CRT and am not sure how to do it. Since my Felton cabinet won't come apart, what is the best way to remove it, put it on something, keep the purity magnets from coming loose, etc. Not to mention that if it implodes, there is not much of a chance of me living to tell about it which makes me very nervous. :)

I lay the set face down and prop it on the front with some towels. You have to remove the chassis also. I mark the things on the neck before removing them. then you can place then exactly where they were. Then you can remove the 4 bolts that hold the crt shield. Wear a face shield for protection during this process. It will protect your face and neck if an implosion happens. REMEMBER there is 2.5 tons of negative pressure in the CRT. Am I right on this number? You can then bend over to remove the CRT. Be cafeful that it does not contact anything on the way out. One small -sharp blow could implode this thing. I also have elbow length leather gloves to compliment the face shield.

Do not do it if you do not need to.

Well the face plate is all painted up. I have to do some fine detail work and it will be done. I ordered the grill cloth and am waiting for it to come. I will wait to install the grill cloth then install the face plate. CAPS are coming with the grill cloth.

Wow that loks nice! How much area does the grille cloth cover?

The grill cloth area is 17" long by 7.5" wide. I am limited to a few options by AES. Mostly because I do not want to splice 2 pieces. Most of their grill cloth is 12" square. I know it is hard to see with the brown paint. This has really been fum. A little elbow grease and you can have a nice set.

Is there something to hold it down along the edges or must you just trim and glue very carefully?

I will have to trim and glue very carefully. I plan using some spray adhesive that I got from a Upholstery shop. I got it to fix my headliner on my 86 Lancer. The old grill cloth came off in one piece. I can use that as a pattern.

I got this roundie out of the shop near Charlie. It is another hurricane survivor. The crt is busted and the power transformer is gone. I have both to fix the set. It has the same chassis of the one I am rebuilding. I will have to paint this face plate also.

That one is identical to mine. I got generic grill cloth at Rat Shack (when they sold that kind of stuff) and cut it to size. I also had to replace the CRT (two heaters open). Mine will at least get new lytics. I'll also recap the sweep section. Fortunately, the boards are in good shape. I don't remember if the fly is original. Since it's been at least ten years, it goes on the variac.

What's the latest on the other Sylvania? Is it near finished?

I am up to mounting the CRT in the cabinet. I will do the electronics next. The move but a damper on my efforts with the set. It is on my list to be completed first.

This project was put off due to my move last January. I finally got the urge to get the set out and get started on it again. A lot of the pictures were lost in the server crash. I will post a few to catch everybody up. SAMS is 759-4. The chassis is on my work bench. I decided to hook it up to the test jig and try it. I got a boat load of sparks from the bottom of the chassis. :sigh: Pulled the plug real quick on that issue. I will order the lytics next week. I have the original chassis and another parts chassis for parts. The three should give me a good chassis.

I used the 1/4" oak plywood sheet sold at Home Depot. The original was the faux woodgrain masonite.

The cabinet was stripped down to the frame and rebuilt. I also had to replace the moulding on the top front of the set. I found the exact moulding at Home Depot. It was 1/4" thinner though. I used a strip of the oak playwood the make up the difference.

The Gold and Silver are Plasti-Kote Classic Metals. They are a dead ringer for the original paint. The gold is 884 Gold Mist. The Silver is 887 Burnished Silver. They come is 6oz spray cans.
