RCA CTC11

1 Attachment(s)
I powered up the Admiral 26UH6 and found the B+ to be too low. I've decided to set it aside for the moment since I would need to move it to another location to do any serious trobleshooting, anyway. Knowing the CRT in my RCA CTC11 was also bad, I put my second usable color CRT in that set today. The CTC11 was missing its 6DQ5 horizontal output tube. Since I didn't have any other 6DQ5's, I borrowed the one from the Admiral set until I can get another one ordered. Powering up the RCA was somewhat more productive. The audio started to come on, then the HV, and then I could see a raster. I tuned in a station (no antenna) and got picture and sound. Next, I'll set up the static and dynamic convergence adjustments.

ctc5

Hey folks, I just thought you would like to see what walked in the door a couple of days ago. Well, walked may not be EXACTLY accurate. How about staggered (me and a friend, carrying the set). This ctc-5 was given to me several years ago but it took this long to muster help to drag it out of their basement. Ever notice how many friends we go through in the TV collecting biz? Anyway this was working the last time they fired it up, many years ago, so that should be good news for the crt. It did not work when I eased it up on the variac but that was only to be expected.

John (it is John right?) a fellow from Wisconsin is looking for someone to repair his 57 RCA B&W portable, do you do that type of work and should I refer him to you?

Another early color collector

Hey! I really am enjoying this site. I am glad
to join my friends Steve Hoffman and Jon (Klatuu). I currently own a just restored RCA CT-100, 2 RCA CTC 5's (Wingate fulldoor maple console, Strathmore full door blonde console.) These models can be seen on Ed Reitan's site. I also own an extremely rare 1954 Capehart 19" color set. Upright open face mahogany console. W/CBS 19vp22 picture tube.I can't inclued pictures of the sets as WEB-tv doesn't permit this. Jon (Klatuu) has digital off air pix of
the CT-100 if he cares to send them to this site.

Westinghouse 22" color tv

Just a late addition on the Westinghouse 22" rectangular color tv. These sets were produced in 1957 in several cabinet styles. The shadow mask picture tube was a 22EP22.The Sams folder is :357-12. Does anyone know if one of these sets survives? Also any info on the number produced? And perhaps a picture or ad? Many years ago I happened on this model set in a tv repair shop. It was for sale. it was I recall a blonde table model. The nice man turned it on and it produced a bright picture. Like a dummy I passed on it. I understand these sets had convergence problems. The repair shop is now a mall.

Steve Hoffman 09-24-2002 10:15 PM

Hey Buddy,

Good to see you here.

When ever you are ready to sell me your beautiful maple RCA CTC 5, let me know!;)

Both Jon and I got quite a thrill seeing your CT-100 finally up and working.

Ya lucky guy!

Steve D. 09-24-2002 10:23 PM

Thanks Steve

Hey Steve,
I'm a little late to the party, but am really enjoying this site. The CT-100 looks even better with the addition of some new tubes. I viewed pictures of your sets and both are outstanding. I especially liked the blonde console.:p:

Rob 09-24-2002 11:59 PM

Welcome aboard Steve D.!

You have some fine collectible color TV's there. I envy you for living in an area where they can be found with some digging and luck. Must try to get some of your pictures on display here. Let me know if I can be of help.

Regards,
Rob

That's the baby!

Amazing, ain't it?

jshorva65 09-25-2002 05:35 PM

Wow! That's a nice Merrill! Great picture! Just make sure you've recapped the focus circuits on it before operating it. I've heard that the focus caps can go and take the CRT with them, so it's best to have new caps in there to be safe.

Steve D. 09-25-2002 06:12 PM

Thanks Rob

Thanks for posting the CT-100 picture. The set has been totally recapped thanks to my friend and fellow CT-100 owner Steve Kissinger. I have additional off air pictures but can't figure a way to jpeg them to Rob with my WEB-tv format. Some servers can receive the forwarded pictures and others can't.

Steve K 09-25-2002 06:39 PM

Hi All:

Steve D. just told me about this site and encouraged me to register. I was the Steve that Steve just mentioned in his last post. I figured that this site could use another Steve:). I too own a CT-100 that I got working (again) a few months ago. I will post a picture of it when I figure out how to do that. The only problem is that my set is in Wisconsin and I live in California. I do get to visit it a few times a year however.

Rob 09-25-2002 07:29 PM

Steve!

Hi Steve K,

Mind if we call you Steve? (a little Monty Python humor) ;)

That's great that you also have a working CT-100. Long distance relationships can be pretty intense during visiting opportunities eh?! Please post pics when you can. We'd love to see it, and stay tuned, thanx to some great contributors....this is the place to see some pretty nice surviving vintage color TV's. Yeah!

Hi Rob:

Here is a picture of my CT-100. Looks pretty much like all the rest! I finally learned how to get a good screen shot from Steve D's set so when I get back to Wisconsin again I will fire it up and try to get some pictures of it operating.

Steve

Steve K 09-29-2002 05:51 PM

Hi Again:

How do you make that picture smaller? I didn't mean to take up so much room.

Steve

Steve, I shrunk it for you. You can re-size an image and let it shrink the file size in many of the picture handling programs such as Photoshop. Thank you Marlin and Eric for volunteering to help.

Appreciation

p: Thanks again, Rob for posting my CT-100 picture. And Steve K.'s CT-100 is not just another set. It a great example of this model. Nice original finish.

You are welcome Steve. Steve K's CT-100 sure looks great and it looked as though it was a big 21" model too until we got the file size under control. :)

Thanks again

Rob,
Thanks again for being the conduit that allows me to share these pictures with others. The digital photos of my CT-100 were taken by Jon Lopez in Aug.2002. The Anchor person is off a CNN broadcast. The color bars are from the internet. The DuMont test pattern is off an internet site devoted to vintage test patterns. Dumont would broadcast experimental color slide pictures over both their regular New York VHF channel 5 as well as a UHF channel during normal off air hours in 1953 and early 1954. To the best of my knowledge DuMont never broadcast any commercial color telecasts.

RCA clones

I believe RCA sold licenses for the use of its design to avoid accusations of having a monopoly on the technology. At least this is what I've read about RCA clones from the 1940's sets by Crosley, Fada and others (with chassis identical to late-production 8TS30's) on up to the Philco and Sylvania 21" color sets. I've long suspected that RCA might have sold the PC boards (or licensed templates) for the color sets. All the circuit boards look alike, but the chassis of the clone sets don't always look like an RCA chassis. Weren't the HV cages always at least slightly different on the RCA clone chassis?

andy,

That is a really nice score! I delaminated one of these badly cataracted CRT's last summer in my RCA, CTC-20 successfully so it can be done. Just be careful and wear eye and body protection. Your's looks great emission wise.

I have a 1966 Philco and the chassis in it has boards that resemble RCA but the main board has a quadrupule diode tube on it that I've never seen on an RCA color set. Here's a picture of my Philco chassis. I don't have the model number handy. Sorry. Here it is with the back off. I got a little over zealous with the compressed air when I was cleaning it out and accidentally damaged the tube layout sticker. :( This one has the 21FBP22 so no chance of cataracts. The CRT is like new.

RCA clones

Hi Andy,
I agree with the others. RCA had several ways of making money off other manufactuers of tv receivers. They would supply under license certain componets that other companies would intergrate into their own designs on their own assembly lines. Or they might build for other companies on the RCA assembly line chassis designed to others specs. And they would build sets that were just rebadged RCA's with different cabinets or logos. Sets sold by Sears or Wards among others fell under this catagory. This still continues to this day with analog sets, vcrs and dvd players ect.

Steve Hoffman 10-23-2002 08:39 PM

Andy, nice score by the way!

Eric H 10-23-2002 10:45 PM

Rob 10-24-2002 11:23 PM

John,

Looking good. The crt makes a good white in the first picture and the convergence from what you can tell from a thumbnail looks good too.

My CTC10/11 has only a B&W picture and I have not pulled the chassis to diagnose it further than test/replace the tubes in the chroma section that made no difference. It doen't even appear that the burst gate is opening and rocking the H. hold didn't affect it at all.

Playing with my vintage TV's has taken a back burner status with my recent push in audio R&D.

Are you planning to sell this one too? :(

Rob

jshorva65 10-25-2002 12:04 AM

Rob,

It definitely sounds like the burst gate is not triggering on your set. Check for bad caps, loose connections, etc. first, but it might be out of alignment. These sets are known for their chroma circuits being picky with their alignment, so if you follow the chroma alignment procedure in the Sams under Miscellaneous Adjustments, that's likely to solve the problem. You'll need a stable 3.58 MHz signal and a VTVM. Sweep and marker generators are also recommended to get it right on target.

This set was sold shortly after I started the restoration. When I posted the screenshots of the set during the initial testing, I was approached with a pretty good offer. I accepted and the buyer sent a deposit, so I cleared a path to the bench as soon as possible (that took some time because there were a lot of heavy items in the way that I was storing temporarily). So far, the set looks like it's coming along nicely. I've got a few finishing touches to go, then it will be ready.

John
