In the fight, Ralph removes the picture tube and it's laying on his kitchen table, obviously a blown-out tube from the looks of the face! A few episodes in Norton's apartment show he was willing to spend the bucks for a table set.

you'd be surprised at how uneducated some people are about those kind of things. my father (who was born in 41 so he's seen some vintage sets) actually tried to talk me out of buying my Magnavox because he thought it was too dangerous! he said he wouldnt even have one in his house let alone work on it or have someone look at it! :no:

This is slightly off the topic, but I just got the old Outer Limits on DVD and if you pause it at just the right point in the beginning before they start messing with it, you can get a good, useable test pattern. Its not the whole thing, it is a bit cut off on the edges, though. (this is one of those retrace line free dvds too) I was watching it on my 55 Westinghouse and just noticed that it has some serious vert. linearity issues, that aren't fixed with the controls, now I have to pull the chassis again, and this is one of those sets where the crt has to come out along with it :sigh:

I've been watching the 3rd year of Bewitched on DVD, I was hoping to see a roundie, but for the most part they have a Zenith rectangular console, but in one episode (#16 on the dvd) Samantha and Darrin are watching TV, and you see them first watching a Zenith roundie, then they show a closeup of the set, and it's the same rectangular Zenith from before! You get to see alot of the TV in this year, alot of the scenes take place infront of that rectangular Zenith.

The switched TVs again two episodes later, Darrin is watching TV in his office, and they show a closeup up of a Zenith rectangular color console, then they show Darrin and Tate talking with the TV shown from behind, and it is a b/w table top model on a tv stand.

It's not unusual for companies to provide their products to shows (now known as product placement) for a consideration. In the case of Bewitched, Zenith supplied sets and got their brand name seen by millions of viewers everytime there was a closeup of the front of a tv. Sometimes different sets were used for insert shots, where the picture on the screen was inserted as a special effect. And later edited into the scene. in post production. This may be done days after the actors completed the principal shooting, and on a separate insert stage. Also two different sets may be used in the same scene because it fits the framing or camera angle of the scene. Ie: a console is in the wide shot and you then see the back of a portable, to suggest the previously seen console, in a tight reverse shot in the same scene. Hope this helps clear up some of the confusion.

I saw the same one tonight... I bought season 3 this weekend. I think this is the only time I've seen a roundie on this show. Funny... I guess they didn't think we'd notice that they changed the set from one scene to the next.

A little while ago, an ad on TV for Mass Mutual was discussing 401k planning... and in the ad, they show the rear of what I think was this General Electric set. They didn't show the front, just the back. I recognized it because of the huge oval speaker, and, you could tell the television slid into the wooden cabinet as this one does.

Aha, I haven't seen the ad in question, but it was described to me yesterday by a (non-expert) friend. Right away I could tell from his description that it was one of those GEs.

Just saw an interesting set on the Twilight Zone tonight. The pic is off the air and ch 56 isn't comming in too good tonight, so it's not that clear. At first they were showing a repair man behing the set with the chassis, I wasn't fast enough with the camera to get a pic of that though.

A little off-topic - since this thread is "TV on TV" but in the movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still" all radios and TV sets are made by Zenith.

That is interesting...when I saw the thumbnail I first thought "color roundie" but then I realized it is, I guess, a 10" in a very fancy cabinet.

At the beginning of the episode Sam and darrin have a strange tv set. It seems it has a small screen despite the cabinet and knobs seem similar to the usual b/w tv. It then reverts to the normal screen size tv and then it's blown out by queen Victoria. Isn't the chassis rather peculiar?

Indeed. That chassis is a 1930s radio. See the perforated shield can with the grid cap hole? I also question the pressboard back cover...

Not quite a TV but interesting premise. An alien planet sells OBIT monitors to the US government. No one knows who ordered them or why. The machines arrive at military installations with instructions to watch everyone to find subersive individuals. Each channel tunes to an individual. The guy watching thinks his wife is having an affair but cann't see the guy on the machine. It breaks the rules and adjusts the machine to tune in the guys frequency and see who it is. He sees an alien on the screen. Watching is addictive to encourage the watching and monitors are scheduled to be delivered to schools and libraries.
