Seller says B&W. And it is surely a remote set. Did RCA ever build remote B&W sets? Could this be a 21" color set? 20" deep which seem deep for the wide-angle B&W tubes of the era.

Here is a cousin to the one on ebay, with slightly different cabinet styling. It came from CA. Unfortunately, my cabinet is very scratched up, and the finish is a faux job. One of these days I will restore the electronics.

If he could afford shipping from Brazil...there are tons of those 21 inch GEs here. I am somewhat amazed that I see that TV so easily here, and that he is finding it so difficult to find it in the USA.

Unusual RCA portable
 

The RCA set posted is from 1958 or 1959. We had one in the early 70's, given to us by a friend of my Dad's. It was a good set and served as my bedroom TV for a number of years, till the flyback melted. Ours was tan / gold trim as opposed to the burgundy / gold. It had a "roly-poly" quality to it, and several time it got knocked off its stand onto the floor. Tough little set!!!

This guy just ended his auction early and cancelled my bid. I suspect he's going to relist it later with a higher starting price. I seem to have bad luck with sets on ebay, last time I bid on a set it was that porthole on which someone drove the price up to 1k.

Maybe cool to you but his ad state that it is a "VINTAGE 1940's TV SET". I questioned him on this and await a response. Reason being the set is obviously a 60's set. Very late 50's at best. It looks to me to have a rectangular crt. 60's. Still though if you think its cool and can avoid shipping costs by picking it up then go for it. I doubt you will have to bid battle on that one. Its worth the $24 if you like it. My opinion is that the vertical section seems to be the most troublesome in almost all old sets. It may be the output tube as the seller mentioned but of course that is the easiest and most logical fix for advertisment purposes. I seriously doubt he has any idea about the repair of the set. Getting the sweep back should not be much trouble if you have some TV repair experience. If you DON'T and want to get into the hobby, a set like this would be a good start.

Yeah, that Farnsworth is pretty neat, but $5k ? Uhh, I DON'T THINK SO !! Same thing on the working CT-100...Twelve-five seems just a tad too high, even for one of those. We'll see what it finally goes for. Betcha it won't make his $8K reserve.

I have heard a lot of the same opinion of the late 50's-mid 60's Zeniths being great sets and easy repairs. For me the ONE set I cant get working is my 59 Space Command. There is a thread or two by me on this set stumping me so I will not lay down the whole story other than to say, I brought it in with Hum for sound and no vertical sweep. I recapped and still have the SAME exact set. I now wonder if some older repair wasnt botched and something is just hooked up wrong. The set looks as if it was virtually NEVER used but I did find evidence of paper cap replacement in the vertical circuit. Almost all of the tubes are factory OEM and tested good. I think my next move will be going through everything with a schematic to look for components in the wrong spot and check all of those crazy Zenith connector strips for bad connections.

I wonder if a shorted vertical output transformer could cause hum in the sound.

I am a bit surprised it did not sell the first time around. Is it not cute? And how many round-screen tabletop TVs had doored cabinets?

I had bid on the Mercury, as it was only a couple miles from here and pickup would be easy, but the seller ended the auction 2 days early and cancelled my bid. I had assumed it was because he either wanted to raise the starting price or had sold it off of ebay, but it's been relisted at the same price, so I don't know what that was about. Oh well, here I go again ...
