I have the one on the right, but with the base. I would rather have those cool legs for mine. Anyone have any?

Well, overall I prefer the legs on the middle one, but that model is known for being high-maintenance.

While going through the family photo album I came across a few pictures that I thought might be of interest to the "gang" here on AK.

The first picture is of yours truly on my Confirmation Day, April 21, 1964. The Admiral TV set prominently included in the photo was originally purchased by my parents approx. 1954. It served us well for quite some time, but I do remember a number of service calls over the years.

In just 7 short months after that first picture was taken my Dad bought our first color set, a Zenith Roundie with a 25MC33 chassis (second picture). It was a great set with only one service call that I remember during it's time with us. Also included in the picture is our Dachshund named Hans Von Schmutzelpootz sitting up on his haunches and waiting for a treat.

Sadly both sets were eventually disguarded and sent to the local Salvation Army.

What's the deal with those early 50's Admiral sets that they ALWAYS lost the control access door on the front panel???

Funny....but I don't ever remember the set having the control access door. Maybe it was lost or broken while I was just a little tyke? (Maybe I did it!!) Bob

Yeah, those sets ALWAYS lost that door, it's incredible!!! But don't blame yourself: that thing was so fragile that on the majority of cases it was the grown up owners of those sets that ended loosing them.

My 15" table model still has the door, but just barely. The part that forms the hinge is pretty fragile plastic. Mine will stay in place if I close it just right but too much of that hinge is gone for it to work right.

Those sets may not have been the best by any standard but they performed nicely--and usually did so for many, many years.

The best is really not about a certain brand name IMHO. The best set I have ever seen is my 1956 Philco. Rearely repaired in over 50 years of service!:thmbsp:

I'm sure my very "blue collar" set by now has run many a circle around $1000 Dumonts' who's bells and whistles started breaking many years ago. :thumbsdn:

Found these while searching the MN Historical Society website. The window displays for 1956 RCA color tv's is from Dayton's downtown. The Motorola dealer was in Golden Valley, MN and the other was from Dayton's Southdale.

Recently I was talking to one of the local tv repairmen, now semi-retired. He started in '59 working for an Admiral dealer. He said that in the early 60s, when Bonanza was one of the few color shows, they would leave a color set in the showroom window hooked to a timer, with a loudspeaker hooked up in the parking lot. Folks would drive up that night and watch color TV from their cars!

Another cartoon character TV set
 

My favorite cartoon character, Donald Duck, with one the very 50ishy style TV sets that used to appear in the stories created by Carl Barks.

That's something special to me, because, as crazy as it might appear, those stories were one of the things that inspired me to start collecting vintage televisions. I always thought that those 1950's style TV sets in Donald Duck's house were so cool looking that I wanted to find the real life counterparts of those TVs. And that was when I was 8, 9, 10 years old... damn, I was a weird kid!!!

I guess I was too, I always liked them too as a kid. Remember the Tex Avery cartoon about "Television of Tomorrow" and it showed all kinds of sets modeled after some of the real ones? It also showed very humorous exaggerations as Tex always did in his cartoons. I also loved the one he did about cars too. I would love to have those on DVD, I haven't seen them in years.

Like yourself, I wish some of these old cartoons (circa 1950s-'70s) were on DVD, as they were really funny.

One of my favorite old TV-repair-themed cartoons (maybe one of the only ones using television repair as the backbone) was a Huckleberry Hound one from the 1960s. Huck was a TV repairman in that one. One of his service calls was to repair a TV in a house with a very mischievious and vicious dog. There wasn't really that much wrong with the TV set; just one bad tube, a very rare type, with a type number a mile long. Huck had one and only one such tube in his tube caddy. Just as he was about to install it in the set, however, the dog somehow got hold of the tube, ran in the back yard with it, and buried it a few feet underground!

I don't remember if Huck ever found the tube and got the TV going again, as it has been a couple decades at least since I saw the cartoon, but I wish I could see it again so I could find out. Oh well, one of these days I may run across a DVD or a box set with these old classic cartoons that actually has this episode. They don't make TV cartoons like that anymore.

I wonder if there are DVD box sets of classic cartoons. I think there should be, somewhere, as many (if not most) old classic television series are now on DVD; classic cartoons, I think, would be the next logical step. I bet they would sell every bit as well as the classic-TV DVDs. Who knows? Someone may have uploaded some of the older cartoons to Youtube, including the one I just referenced. I'll have to look at Youtube later on; haven't been there in awhile. It always amazes me just how much unique content shows up on that site; seems like there is something new there all the time. Never a dull moment on YouTube. :yes:

Jeff, you're right about the sets in that cartoon being modeled after real life ones-one is most definitely a Natalie Calmus set.

I wonder who dubbed in the idiotic, deafening faux laugh track? It really ruins it.

Sure does, I thought the same thing. I also think some of it has been cut out. I have a really good photographic memory and it seems to me a few scenes have been deleted, please correct me if I'm wrong.

That looks like the first color set that I had. It was a gift from a friend at work and was in just fair condition. However, the price was right, it was color and it was mine!
