That's definitely a General Electric set in the 1961 pic; I'd say circa 1954. Let me see if I can find an exact match....

Solid wood cabinet maybe? My 1989 Panasonic console has one, and it's rather difficult to even push along laminate flooring. If I recall correctly, that Sony had glass set into the top as well.

Found a few more old family photos with sets in them. The one picture is from a slide and backwards (RCA CTC-12 color). In my Grandfather's house (father's side of the family). My mother remembers watching the Moon Landing in '69 at my father's parent's house on this set, while my grandfather was trying to record it on his 8MM camera. He wanted to get a movie of it b/c my father was in Vietnam at the time.

Second is a DuMont RA-103 in my Grandfather's office. "Grandma!!!! get out of the way so we can see the TV!!!" Ha!

And they had one of the SHITTIEST tubes in them n HISTORY. Maybe even a 23EGP22 was better (at lifespan, that is.) The 91-99 Zenith tubes WERE worse, though.


One would be HARD pressed to find one today---with a good tube.

Looks to have A/C over the door too. Not that common then. A/C was EXPENSIVE in 1950.

I wish I knew exactly what model it was, but it wasn't necessarily a KV-2601, the KV-2648R I just found out is identical in appearance. I wonder if the CRT in the latter is any better...

Oh you mean the TV. I'm thinking if she's holding a glass in the pool that is very dangerous. Hopefully it's plastic.

There is a picture I have seen (that was maybe even posted in this topic!), that shows a person watching a Sentinel 400TV 7-inch portable set-on the edge of a bathtub!

Nope, that TV was a run-of-the-mill upright 50s console that was well away from the tub.

That's the name that I remember as well, but I just found some of his posts and there is *no* avatar showing at all. He hasn't posted for over a month, hope he is ok!

Nice magazine cover, although irrealistic - who would drag a heavy console TV like that to the side of a pool... and there would always be the risk of splashing water on the TV, damaging components...

And obviously NOT part of the "working class", either...

Outdoor tv sets DO exist, though VERY expensive..LCD sets made for use outdoors and fully protected against the elements.

When I first saw that magazine cover, I scoffed, because no 1950 TV that I've ever seen would be viewable in full sunlight. The daylight would wash out the picture. The accompanying article says that there really were a few such TVs, although they may not have been available to the general public. A "prominent movie star" asked H.L. Hoffman, president of the Los Angeles Hoffman radio/TV company, for a set that he could watch at poolside. Hoffman provided a modified model 947 with a "black-faced picture tube" that was angled slightly downward to reduce glare. The article says that a similar set was installed "near" the pool at the Beverly-Wilshire hotel in Beverly Hills, and perhaps at other area hotels.

The TV picture in the magazine cover looks faked to me (of course, that would not be terribly unusual, even for an indoor shot of a TV playing). There is a similar black and white photo accompanying the article inside the magazine. It shows the same TV and the same three women, but in that shot, the TV screen is completely washed out from direct sunlight.

I don't doubt that these TVs existed -- at least, for a few of the rich & famous -- but I'll bet they looked a lot better in shade than full sun.

I found this photo on the Best Buy website today while shopping for speakers for my GE 7700 amp. Believe me... it got my attention... to go to a Best Buy site and find a cool looking old set! It kinda looks like one of those cool General Electric 21" sets that would have the big-ass speaker.

Since this song is at LEAST 20 years old now...I wonder if that shop still exists--or if it has gone into the "history books". I saw a couple of sets I recognized in the video--including what looked to be a 9-186 style Zenith set form the 1980's--and maybe a sharp linytron set too.

Yes I have shopped in Magnolia HiFi many times, being a Seattle native.

I bought several things there including my first CD player , a Yamaha in the 80s. Great store. Hi priced, but worth it. My CD player died about 2 weeks after warranty, and they fixed it anyway.

Even though the stand alone stores are mostly gone, the same attitude lives on, via Best Buy .

I doubt it's still there. It would be hard to run a lucrative TV repair shop these days. I do believe that one of the many that were once in my area is still in existance, but they have been there for decades. I'm sure the owner just keeps it open for something to do instead of watching grass grow on a porch.

They still have a probably 70s Sylvania sign on the front of the place. That's cool. I remember going there probably close to 20 years ago to ask if they had any old sets sitting around and got a story that I have heard too many times of the truckloads of 40s-50s sets that they "hauled off." :tears:
