Westinghouse rectangular color???

The seller thinks it's color(ed) anyone know if this is the ultra rare rectangular Westy Color set from the 50's?

Nope, that's not it.

Sandy G 04-04-2007 07:34 PM

Were any of those ever even released for sale? My feeble mind is telling me they were experimental purposes only...Do we know if any have even survived?

David Roper 04-04-2007 08:21 PM

There were at least two models--a tabletop and a console--offered by Westinghouse in 1957. Our own Charles K. Halbert has posted about one he had once upon a time and how its performance left much to be desired.

Among other attributes, it's a series-strung set with one blade of the AC plug tied right to the chassis.

ETF database confirms the survival of one, possibly another.

Westinghouse 22" color tv ad

Scroll through my web page for a 1956 Christmas ad for the Westinghouse 22" color receiver. These sets were offered for sale to the public. Convergence problems were common with these tubes.

It does not look like a color set . I think the buyer has to be a bit smarter then the seller when it comes to buying tvs on ebay . Most of the sellers pick these sets up at yard sales or flea markets and really have no idea of what it is they have . They just buy it and hope to make money on it . I bought a zenith space command 400 from a guy on ebay , a few months back . He listed it as a color set . Being i knew there was such a thing as a space command color set, i bid on it and won it . When i got there to pick it up , it was black and white . The seller seemed puzzled and was starting to argue the point with me . He thought it was color and the color wasnt working . I kinda laughed . I liked it anyhow and just took it and wanted it to be a smooth tranasaction . So one must be smarter then the seller when it comes to ebay sometimes , LOL .

Agreeing; its NOT the 22" color set. The color set has a lot more masking around the tube, and has the on-off-vol pot at the left end of the control panel.

Steve,

are there any of these sets known to survive?

OK, I got some pictures from the seller, one concern I have is they are hosted on a Russian Site. Not sure why a seller in Fla would have an account with a Russian picture hosting site however the fact that they can provide the pics shows that they probably do have the set.

The only indication of color I can see is the three colored triangles in the logo, the back looks pretty plain for a color set!

Mine is now in the hands of Dr. Dan... I think I've heard of at least one or two others.

Other than the LTP convergence, what kind of performance did you get out of this set?

ohohyodafarted 04-09-2007 05:40 PM

Sure would be neet to see a photo of the set Charles. Must be almost the rarest color set around.

I doubt the reclusive and mysterious Dr. Dan is going to allow any photos of his collection. Please go to my site and scroll down to the Dec. '56 Westinghouse ad for the 22" color receiver.

Does the set really look like the artwork in the ad?

Dave,

Except for the inserted color picture on the screen, that's the Westinghouse 22" color set. I had a chance, many years ago, to purchase this exact model at a used tv store for $100.00. Much to my regret, I passed. Westinghouse also offered a console model, 22K161.

My God, I haven't seen that Westinghouse script in years. My parents had a Westinghouse portable phono they bought when they got married that had that. They kept it over 30 years and it still worked. Thanks for that memory jog, Eric.
