Oh crap, what have I done?!

I picked this up today, after promising myself not to buy old radios!

What the heck is it?

I know, I know... pop it open and look for chassis numbers, etc. Just haven't gotten time yet.

Is it supposed to have a glass cover over the dial?

Cool...I would've bought!

marantzfan 08-27-2007 07:12 PM

Oh, that old piece of junk. I'll take it off you're hands just ship it to me..:D

WhiteSE 08-27-2007 07:13 PM

daaang,,,,that is freaking cool looking...if you need to dispose call me...

similost 08-27-2007 07:21 PM

I would have bought that in a heart beat.. BEAUTIFUL!!!! I love the way they put the "lid" over the tuning eye.. gives it a lot of character.. I would have imagined it would have had a lens over the dial.. but you never know...

OH.. thanks to Targeteye and great info he fed me, I would say that's newer than 38.. that has the newer style eyey tube, I can't remember the number, and too lazy to look, but I have the same tube in my radio, and they started making them in 39.. at least from the way I understand it..

mhardy6647 08-27-2007 07:26 PM

Looks quite nice to me.
Guess it's a Silvertone :-)

Celt 08-27-2007 07:33 PM

Nice Sears Silvertone! It's missing its bezel and glass lens. But a clock parts supplier might have something to fit.

similost 08-27-2007 07:35 PM

Check out this site.. it's the golddial faces and several are the same as yours.. it's just the part numbers for the faces, but it tells you who made what model and who made what chassis for each...

OH.. I wanted to mention. Check out a product called Howard's Restore-a-finish, and their feed-n-wax...

VERY good quality stuff.. it would really make that case look spectacular. It does not harm the finish. It will not desolve it.

I used it on my radio, and all we could say when I was done was WOW.. back to it's former glory..

OvenMaster 08-27-2007 07:58 PM

 Redboy, that is one gorgeous radio. Congratulations. If I bought that, I'd display it even if it didn't work.
Tom

Redboy 08-27-2007 08:01 PM

Yeah similost, I saw the pics you posted of your cleanup job on that console radio. I better hunt down some of that Howard's stuff.

Tom, I assume it doesn't work, but who knows? The thrift I got it from usually "tests" their electronics before putting them on the shelf. It makes me sick to think of the tube stuff that gets tossed or whatever because it "doesn't work!"

similost 08-27-2007 08:03 PM

That was a thrift find? DAMN!!!! You mind me asking what you gave for it? If not, I understand...

I got the Howard's from Home Depot.. Used it on a couple other wood things we have around the house.. LOVE IT!!!!

Redboy 08-27-2007 08:09 PM

Understand this first. I've stopped at that particular shop almost daily for the last four months and have had nothing worth mentioning to show for it.

Jackson's got new digs. :D

similost 08-27-2007 08:11 PM

Persistance pays :D

doucanoe 08-27-2007 08:13 PM

Boy, I can see why you decided to break your "no tube radios" rule for this one. she's a beaut!

Even if you don't rebuild and run it, that is sure an eyecatcher. :thmbsp:

Redboy 08-27-2007 08:17 PM

Yep, it's pretty! When I first saw it I thought it was one of those modern replicas that look okay until you see the big "Collector's edition" plaque like a neon sign, front and center!

When I turned it around and saw the room heaters, I knew I was going to have a hard time walking away...

similost 08-27-2007 08:37 PM

If ya ever decide you don't like the heat and wanna get outta the kitchen.. you know how to find me.. When I got the one I have, I know I've been bit hard.. even the wife agrees I can buy more

clydeselsor 08-27-2007 09:08 PM

That is really cool! I would have bought that without giving it another thought!

radioactive 08-27-2007 09:15 PM

nice radio redboy. i sure the hell would of bought it too.i started this crazy hobby with wooden tube radios then progressed to the tube shortwave recievers and finally tube amps etc..btw is the tuning eye a 6e5?

targeteye 08-27-2007 10:23 PM

Good Find Redboy! I love the gold dial silvertones and you've got a really nice one. That is a 1937 set. Table top receivers with eye tubes are not easy to find as they were supposed to be inexpensive sets.

I regret to inform you however that yours if missing some stuff. Yours would have had a dial glass and a bezel that the glass would fit into.

Ah, you stumbled on that one somehow, the next one you find will have a beat up wood cab with no knobs but an intact glass and bezel ($5.00) :thmbsp:

Excellent!

Dave A 08-27-2007 10:57 PM

Dial pix here

These pix and sites will show you what the dial bezel and glass should look like. First is a 4-knob version (Sears 4569);

http://www.radioblvd.com/morepix/4569.jpg

And the second (website only) is a 5-knob console version (Sears 4586) which does look bigger than yours, but not sure of the true scale in console size;

Nice catch. Now a televison is next.

that thing has some kind of freaky attraction like in those trash horrors where the thing draws you close then eats your brain or something. wicked find :thmbsp:

Sandy G 08-28-2007 05:44 AM

I don't know why anybody in their right mind would want such ao old dusty, junky thing like that...Unless it was to add to the 2 or 3 dozen I already have...<grin> Great find, Redboy ! I predict you'll have the old gal singin' in no time...

Redboy 08-28-2007 05:48 AM

This is your fault, Sandy! I put the blame for this squarely on your shoulders. :D

sean 08-28-2007 07:28 AM

That is a Silvertone model 4565 according to the Radio Attic. It has 8 tubes including the eye. Should be quite a performer.

http://radioatticarchives.com/radio.php?radio=5761

Schematic is here:

http://www.nostalgiaair.org/PagesByM...3/M0017113.pdf

Looks like there were 2 versions of the chassis that went in that model. Chassis model 100.151 and model 101.410.

Sandy G 08-28-2007 08:34 AM

You could prolly, if you got industrious, make a bezel out of a cross-section of 4"-or whatever- PVC pipe, & if you had access to a lathe, do a pretty good job of "phonying up" something that looked like the original bezel.. A local glass shop should be able to cut out a suitable sized-replacement for the dial glass...

Reece 08-29-2007 06:31 AM

That's a very desirable radio. The big gold dial Silvertones from the mid to late thirties are highly sought after, whether console or table model.

Redboy 08-29-2007 09:21 AM

sean, thanks for the links! I'm always amazed at what's out there.
