Same model as mine... I'm not selling at this time, but I'm curious to see what this one brings. It's one of the smallest and easiest-to-handle roundie consoles, which is one reason I picked it to keep. Mine is repaired (not re-capped), and is working fine with a NOS military CRT.

OMG!!! Thats a brilliant picture!! Does this set use the 21fjp22 crt as well??

jpdylon 10-03-2007 02:43 PM

Beautiful Charles!

I want that set

compucat 10-04-2007 06:56 AM

That's a Zenith alright. I'll have to post a picture of mine in operation now.

fujifrontier 10-04-2007 09:50 PM

that's simply glorious...

kx250rider 10-06-2007 10:59 AM

Thanks for the compliments!!

That set has a military surplus CRT; I think it's an HR21GVRP22. HR-something anyway. It isn't any brighter than the regular ones, but it was easier to get convergence and purity. I think they still use those in some airport control tower radar scopes. They're still on the current US Navy inventory sheet, according to one of our members here who is an active Navy tech.

The contrast is probably better because I put the original tinted glass from the Zenith 21FBP22 over the existing bonded glass on the tube. That photo is taken while I had it on for the '07 Rose Parade on New Years.

Would that be a black-matrix tube? Where do I find the order sheet for airport surplus? :D

radiotvnut 10-06-2007 03:36 PM

Man, those people that think an old Color TV can't produce a good picture need to see that Zenith in operation. That color picture looks just as good, if not better, than a modern set.

Pardon my ignorance, but why would tinted glass improve the contrast? And what color of tinting was used?

Is that tube still being made somewhere for the military? If so, it would be nice to find out how to get them.

The tinting attenuates room light on the way in and again on the way out, but attenuates the CRT output only once, on the way out. Therefore the blacks are darker with the tint.

The tint was/is almost always neutral gray. There were a few exceptions -IIRC, GE had blue-face tubes for a while.

fsjonsey 10-08-2007 10:49 PM

Is the military still having JAN tubes produced? Not just CRT's, but other tubes?

Eric H 10-08-2007 11:35 PM

If a toilet seat cost the Military $700 then here's a (imaginary) price list for Mil Tubes :scratch2:

5U4....$490.38

6AU6....$680.49

10BP4....$12000.98

21FBp22....$21000.12

Charles.... Might I assume you took that photo with a long exposure? The text, and stationary objects look great, but the float is a little smeared.

Generally, floats don't move that fast, so this must have been a long exposure! :D

fujifrontier 10-10-2007 09:07 AM

it would be funny if floats DID move that fast :D

Hi everyone! I was reading through the threads and was quite surprised. This is my avatar and my favorite Tv. I pointed out the remote to the seller but loved the set enough to go get it anyway. It was definitely worth it, for both the tv and the quality time with my Dad. I don't get to see him as much as I'd like. The same seller also had a CTC-5 Super that he was going to sell, I offered him three hundred but he wouldn't take it. He sold it to someone in Belgium? for $1525.00, way too much in my opinion. He did let me go in and take a good look at it, it was in absolutely beautiful condition. But I still wouldn't pay that much. Maybe if it was fully restored.
