Can you tell me what this floorstanding console radio is?

Something my wife found that will be up for sale. Just kind of wondering if it's anything worth looking at, other than she really likes the wood and grillcloth. I'm thinking it's a Philco or maybe RCA? Doesn't seem to say that too loud though if it is either...

Don't know what it is but I sure like it!

similost 08-06-2008 09:29 AM

Yeah.. so does my wife, and any excuse to get something old and cool if it's worth it... :D

Fisherdude 08-06-2008 12:39 PM

Well, after going through 300++ pages of reference pics, etc., nada.

I found a few that had a family resemblance, but not specifically that one.

I'm guessing Silvertone, or possibly RCA.

Can you get any more info?

similost 08-06-2008 12:42 PM

That's all I got on it.. I was running through a bunch of pictures too, and that was kinda why I thought maybe RCA, but not really... I could believe Silvertone too... It's supposed to be at an Estate Sale that is starting tomorrow, and they list nothing about it other than antique radio..

mhardy6647 08-06-2008 12:44 PM

I was thinking Silvertone too. If it were an election, we'd know the right answer by simple majority!

EDIT: Take a look at the antique radio grille cloths at www.tubesandmore.com They are often quite diagnositic of manufacturer. There's one patter there that's at least klind of similar; AES says it's Zenith.

I could easily believe it... sure is a small dial face for such a large case.. Seems like something Silvertone would do... Wonder if it sold through a Sears catalog.. :scratch2:

electroking 08-06-2008 02:45 PM

This radio sure has a minimal number of knobs. Assuming it has BC and SW bands,
this just leaves POWER-VOLUME, BAND and TUNING. A fairly low-end radio, but
still interesting if you like the styling. Good luck.

similost 08-06-2008 02:47 PM

Yeah.. it's about the style for my wife.. I still got my Zenith sitting there as a hat and goggle holder in the antique room, and the radio not working just cause it looks cool :( I really need to find someone in the area that can get it up and running for me..

ke4jhj 08-07-2008 10:27 AM

I have searched through hundreds of pictures and come up with nothing. Although it may not be high-end, it may be a very unusual brand, therefore it may be worth checking out.

You have my curiousity up!

It does look nice, also.

similost 08-07-2008 10:39 AM

I thought that cloth looked Zenith too, but the radio itself sure isn't.. or at least appears to not be Zenith..

THe sale started today, and I can't get there until Saturday, so I'm hoping that maybe it still may be there.. but like I really need another floor stander.. I've got two I need to get running first..

Arkay 08-07-2008 11:43 AM

I can tell you what it is...

it's beautiful!

:D

Sorry not to be of help beyond that, but that much I am quite certain of. :D

Very interesting.

I wonder if it could be a custom job. Maybe a cabinet maker made it to save cost of buying one. The radio face would have to have been used on some model to identify the chassis. If there are no decal letters to identify the controls I would think it was made by a top-level handyman.

Jeffhs 08-07-2008 06:40 PM

Silvertone would be my best guess as well. My grandmother had a 1948 Silvertone radio/phono console with a radio dial very similar to this one, but the dial on hers wasn't nearly as small as the one pictured in this thread (for openers, one could read the tuning scales on her console without a magnifying glass!). However, I have never, in 40+ years around radio and electronics, seen a console radio with a tuning dial that small. I would almost be tempted to guess that the radio chassis isn't very large, either.

mr_fixer 08-07-2008 06:54 PM

I don't suppose there is a way to get a pic of the back of the radio? I'm thinking it looks silvertone, truetone, motorola or wells gardner

My thoughts, too. The fact that the three knobs are that close together made me think the chassis is probably quite small.

For a floor stander, it's also a very simple, not at all ornate cabinet.

toxcrusadr 08-11-2008 10:11 PM

So, did you buy this thing?

I'm thinking it could be a farm radio, those were usually very simple and inexpensive. Chassis was small because there was no power transformer. A look in the back would tell.

Also, I know a guy in your area (I think) who does great restoration as a cottage business. I could hook you up, if you want.

Some mfgrs used other chassis during the war, notably car radios, or portables... Put a power supply with it, plus a big speaker, and bingo: WHAT war shortage?

similost 08-12-2008 05:35 AM

Hey Tox.. if you do know someone in my area that could get at least one of my Zenith's up and running, I would appreciate it VERY much..

Fisherdude 08-12-2008 06:50 AM

Simi, do we have any updates?

similost 08-12-2008 08:27 AM

Oh.. sorry.. no.. we never made it to that sale. Instead we went to the one I bought all the albums at, and then finished up my RCM...

We both really liked the radio, but after we talked, and since we couldn't put a name to it, and we're running out of floor space, we decided we better not go look..

paulsradios 10-10-2008 07:17 PM

Hi,

It's a GE. I was given one some time back but it was in real bad shape & I put it by the curb. Cannot remember the model number.

Paul

lha1992 10-10-2008 07:30 PM

I was about to say it was a GE to because I saw one for sale a few months back.

Mark W. 10-10-2008 08:47 PM

My 1936 Silvertone has a large round dial with 5 knobs (but then it is a SW as well)

ablethevoice 10-10-2008 09:00 PM

I'm no old radio scholar but it looks more like a Wells-Gardner than an RCA. And yes, indeed - whatever it turns out to be it sure is purdy!

similost 10-10-2008 09:44 PM

No idea what it was.. didn't make it to the sale..
