So, what kind of man reads Playboy? And purchases a 1963 Admiral roundie?

At least I think that's what it is, with an actual off-screen picture, too!

But what show is that? And why is the height cranked up?

It's definitely an Admiral, looks to be remote too. The mic is the round hole under the control panel. We're a Playboy household and I have lots of color tvs, I guess they're right:thmbsp::D

I only look at the pictures, and watch the Playmates on "the girls next door" or whatever it is called (like it really matters) on color tv:D:banana:

That's a nice tv, the program looks like it might be a fashion show or a interview with a clothing designer and 3 models wearing his spring designs. Heck the lady in green is a real hottie, she reminds me of Barbara Feldon of Get Smart fame.

Looks like it might be a game show to me. Kind of hard to tell.

Cool TV, I thought the program looked like The Newlywed Game. But I don't think that is the case. The woman in green is certainly a hottie. I love those early 60's hairstyles.

The control panel "hole" is the UHF delete cover.

Good to know, but Admiral does use that design for the mic too. I guess it is easy to confuse. Now that you mention it, it does look to be solid instead of the little metal screen in the hole. Good eye Bryan.

So there you have it. Your early color TVs most likely came from playboy households!
I always liked those ads that bring in all those statistics.

That sscreen shot looks like a program called "AN EVENING WITH'' WGN would catch stars and groups off the trains and jets and offer free exposure, that show wsa great that originated from WGN tv, I think it was one of the last broadcasts from the old location or one of the first broadcasts from west bradley place which was all color in 1960-61 as for that hottie in the green, looks like a young Vivian Delecaiza, hope thats spelled right she was a regular fill in on GN and in the 70s she was a regular on the Jim conway show a local WGN mid day talk show

There's just something about 60's chicks with their helmet hair and heavy made up eyes that gets my blood racing.

For those of you that own former Playboy sets, you might want to give the knobs and remotes a extra good scrubbing...if you know what I mean.

HaHa! Im pretty clean minded, but I admit, I though the exact same thing you did! I agree, women in back in the 60s looked really good. Look at old photos like that, and you wonder what happened over the years. If a woman looked like that today, alot of guys would certianly be looking (I certianly would!). So I dont know why things had to change. Ive said it numerous times, I was born in the wrong generation.

But back to the topic, thats a nice set. I would think that if the ad was aimed at the man who was looking for a "quality TV", they should be showing a zenith set in this ad for obvious reasons. Then again, its hard to see quality when they are looking at a TV with a missing back cover and no chassis. Take a good look, you can see the floor through the bottom of the cabinet! If Im not mistaken, the other TV off to the left has its cover removed resting on the wall. Yep, they should have been looking at zenith's!

I wish I could identify the location visible outside the window. I wonder if this is a downtown Chicago Admiral showroom? I know Zenith had such a showroom, but I don't know about Admiral. Can anyone identify the stereo console in the background?

TV stations would have had color video tape, so the program is not necessarily live at the time of day indicated by the daylight outside, but it was likely actually on the air. (There is an outside possibility this screen photo was cut in, but it doesn't look that way - a graphic artist would not have included the visible dark edge on the left.)

All in all, it's an amazing photo with the TV picture and the external scene both showing.

It would be 20 years later when I had a CED Videodisc of Playboy programming. No, it was just "R" rated... :D

LOL!! Doug and I have quite a bit in common but being clean minded is NOT one of them.:no: I agree about the hair and make-up styles of the '60s, TOO hot! They really get my horizontal output tube all excited! I have Vargas and Playboy pin-ups all over my tv room and I plan to put up more. Personally, I think the women's styles of today are a bit trashy, I too was born in the wrong decade. My advise to all: watch Playboy TV on a Roundie, it looks AWESOME:thmbsp::D:smsex:

What a fantastic thread! Playboy, '60s hotties (now in their sixties), helmet hair (sans pillbox hat), long fake eyelashes, great album cover (hate the song), stars and groups offering free exposure, great flesh tones, and a roundie that has the vertical cranked to give the girls longer looking legs. He probably worked for DOW Chemical. What a great decade. Sex, drugs, and rock-N-Roll forever!:banana::banana:

This IS a fun photograph. My take on it:

The shot was made with natural lighting. Look at that as yet (at this writing) unidentified stereo console. Notice that it and that whole back area of the room is NOT in focus; it's because the lens is way open, which of course causes a narrow depth of field because (again) the shot was taken with little and probably no artificial lighting, just what's coming in those huge windows. The operating set and the 'talent' are all that's in focus.

Furthermore, that operating set is facing away from the windows so it receives as little of the available light as possible and allows the film to register the video image with acceptable contrast. It all fits: taken not in a showroom, actual TV image on the screen, and an available light photo -- look at all those reflections in the polished cabinet tops -- nobody is going to air brush them in.

:tresbon:Eagle-eye (also known as Doug) spotted the open-cabinet, which makes it a prop for sure. This is certainly a stylist's set and not a showroom. I visited the Zenith showroom in Chicago in January 1964 and it looked like a showroom, nothing like this room. What this may well be is an area in a building that was rented or otherwise made available just to take this shot, which will perhaps make it all the more difficult to identify from the window view. In the mid-seventies, GQ magazine did this in NYC to illustrate its hi-fi articles. They made a big production of it, shipping gobs of stereo equipment to an up-scale apartment just for an article illustration.

As for the 'hottie' [known as 'talent' today but 'the broad' back then (a term of endearment mostly, not so much the negative connotation it may project today, just listen to Sinatra songs of that time)], check those feminine hands with the manicured nails and pink polish. Today they'd be fake and/or painted black.

Just want to point out that the set is tuned to channel 5, which would have been NBC if in Chicago. Still don't recognize the host (assume it's the guy with arm raised to apparently hold a microphone - hard to see). Wish I could see more of the program's set and could tell what the painting on the floor is. Also, in the realm of useless info, there seems to be the hand of a 7th person at the far left.

ya' know the guy in the suit looks a little uncomfortable with Lady in green so close by. which is sad because she appears to be digg'n him. just my 2 cents worth, logan
PS i still think the program is some sort of a fashion show, 3 ladies of different ages but all have the same height, body shape and wearing the same gloves.

I agree. Women back then took pride in their look. They dressed to the nines in those tight form fitting dresses, pearls etc....I wasn't around back then, but some of the most gorgeous women appeared on TV and in movies then.

I agree. Zenith would be the BEST buy. I bet the guy wouldn't spring for the space command remote, since he had to save a little to keep up that subscription to Playboy.

Even though i graduated from high school in 1993 i will say that the girls i went to school with had more class, purity, and respect for themselves than the ones i see today. No skank! Recently i was watching an old Monkees tv episode online, and the blonde female that Davy Jones was trying to save from being murdered looked super hot! At that moment i wished i was Davy. LOL! As far as the 60's women i liked Elizabeth Mongomery, and Barbara Eden.

Me too Craig! I watched Bewitched and I dream of Jeannie religiously, I always would watch for when Barbara would show her belly button! Funny how that was not allowed on tv then. I think they let her get away with it because she was so freakin hot! They used to point out all the times she showed it on tv land back in the day. Her stomach was soooo hot! Hmmmm. Maybe I should have my Girlfriend dress in her costume!:smsex:

Mary Ann for me too, I like the "country bumpkin" type:thmbsp: I grew up on a farm as a kid and also worked and lived on a Black Angus farm for a few years. I really miss it.

Everybody expressed my first thoughts of the lady in green very well but I have had the impression that women and everybody had more appropriate, intelligent and all around more cool personalities back then which makes me find those times to be the better sexy than today's ways. I hope to someday see the tapes of Playboy Afterdark that I have seen bits from on Hugh Hefner's biography. Is he the luckiest man ever created or what? I also was born too late:(

With all the talk about hot women of the 1960's i just had a thought about former rocker Grace Slick from the Jefferson Airplane. When she debuted as a vocalist with the group she was a former model, and drop dead gorgeous. If you did not think she was hot their is something wrong with you! Watch the White Rabbit clip on Youtube from the Smothers Brothers show for yourself. Their is also a clip on Youtube called El Diablo which has a bunch of photos of her too. As for the Smothers Brothers clip i think it would look awesome shown on a roundie!

Talking about 1960's women, wow, since I was a kid I always had the hots for those female officers of the original "Star Trek" show... VERY nice legs they had, in those mini-skirts... I really thought that Captain Kirk was an extremely lucky guy, having all that hot women around him all the time... they picked really gorgeous women to appear in that show.

Many years later, when I bought an William Shatner autobiography, there was a very good explanation of why they had so many beauties in the original Enterprise: NBC executives were never ( even before the pilot episode was shot ) happy with the show, they thought it was too "intelectual" for the average TV viewer, so the producers decided to put hot women in miniskirts as a way of pulling more ratings and keep the network executives happy.
