Ok well......

It's boring in here lately. Lets talk about tvs or something. It's obvious we can't talk politics:nono:

MAXZ28 11-06-2008 03:29 PM

Old TV's are cool! :smoke:

freakaftr8 11-06-2008 05:07 PM

zenithfan1 11-06-2008 08:18 PM

I am the great Cornholio! I need tp for my bung hole..........heh heh heh.. yeah
I also need a good 21AXP22 for my 5 that I am recapping. And.... I'm going to get a '65 Zenith roundie and also a '68 concentric tuning Zenith console this weekend. Anyone else with tv plans this weekend?

Me too (both needing a 21AXP22 and having TV plans this weekend) - hoping to fire up the recapped CTC-5 minus CRT (see the "I've been blessed" thread) and tune for minimum smoke.

JB5pro 11-06-2008 09:35 PM

OK... here's a brain teaser...

So, I have this CTC-15 that has the old fly gett'n too hot after 30 to 45 min of play. Too hot to me means that after such time of play I feel it and kinda can't hold my hand to it and clearly the wax would be melt'n down which upsets me terribly. So, I never watch my brand new(Hawkeye excellent rebuild) 21FJP22 original that came with the set new. Kinda depress'n. I am aware of the alignment procedure for the horiz section but have no milliammeters yet. I suspect some little cap or two is out because when I put my B&K crosshatch generator on it and procede with the horiz section alignment using my RCA Senior VoltOhmyst I cannot get proper horiz sizing from side to side. I can't make the squares on both sides all the same size. I have been thinking that if the circuits are functioning good that I should be able to make the squares all the same size and thus get the equivelant of using the milliammeters. Am I wrong or do I likely have ill caps?

zenithfan1 11-06-2008 11:14 PM

Well, I really don't know what else to say except to get a good milliammeter and to carefully check all the caps in the horizontal section. Sounds like the cathode current is too high to me. I would check the resistors too if all else fails.

Old TV's are not cool. In fact they're so uncool that I have to lower my heating system while watching them. :D

jpdylon 11-07-2008 12:28 AM

waiting for a degaussing coil to make my CTC-11 pretty again after moving it.

Going to tear apart my Silvertone CTC-12 and get to work on it. Been waiting to get to that blond beauty for awhile now.

Maybe I'll get some supplies and take a stab at this cataract thing on one of my FJs

In this bad economy thats a good thing!

zenithfan1 11-07-2008 08:08 AM

I'm glad people are posting again, I made this thread as an anything tv goes thread so we don't have to worry about going OT. That's nice once in a while. Lets call it the Early Color Television stimulus package:D

MAXZ28 11-07-2008 08:11 AM

What are some of your favorite vintage TV sets in your collection? I have nothing to offer as the only tv set I have that is remotely vintage is a Sony Trinitron from 1991.

zenithfan1 11-07-2008 08:30 AM

Some of my favorites are the '65 Zenith combo set 25MC33 chassis, '64 Zenith Space Command {avatar} 25LC20QS chassis, '63 Zenith black metal table top 26KC20 and my recently aquired CTC-5 Wingate.

bgadow 11-07-2008 12:44 PM

I think adjusting the horiz efficiency for proper horizontal lineage will get the cathode current right-some service material I've read has hinted at that. But I would want to double check it. Shouldn't be too tough to find a meter? My Radio Shlock digital multimeter will do it, though nowadays I use an old Simpson that a retired Sears repairman gave me. Analog is a lot better than digital here, too.

Going tommorrow to meet with a gentleman who advertised some test equipment in the paper. Should be interesting-not the equipment, but just talking to him. He mentioned being a retired missile designer. Got his start as a kid tinkering with radios.

The election night thread got locked before I could chime in to say that my CTC-15 worked great that night; I used the digital converter and it's starting to grow on me-signal strength is improving, for one. Yours truly is a "political operative" (hold on, I'm not going there!) and while making annoying phone calls to people last week I struck up a conversation with a kindly old man in my town. After a minute or two I figured out he was the guy with all the ham towers in the backyard. Before the conversation was over I had promised to visit him soon-need to do that in the next week. Sounds like a very interesting guy. Can't wait to see his shack. Sounded pretty lonely, his wife has dimensia and he is her caretaker. Guys, make those contacts while you can. I know I'll be glad I visited both of these fellas.

I think my wife bought a factory refurbished Roomba at Big Lots today, one that is marked "battery won't hold charge" and was priced at $49. If she did, guess I'll try rebuilding the battery pack with off-the-shelf nicads. Can get, on the same order, maybe from mouser, some caps to fix up my CTC-5 horizontal problem.

That's about all that's going on here and now. Need to get back to work!

old_tv_nut 11-07-2008 12:54 PM

I hope to be watching the Rose Parade on a roundie in January, but I don't think I'd bother watching election returns on one even if I had it functioning -- much of the graphics would be off-screen.

zenithfan1 11-07-2008 12:57 PM

Ahhh! Dang it Bryan, you're going OT! Just kidding!!!:D seriously though, great reading, let us know how it goes meeting those guys. They sound quite interesting. You are most definitely right about making contact with these type of guys, unfortunately, many are getting very old and are taking their wonderful stories and experiences with them when they pass. Time can be a cruel thing.

zenith2134 11-07-2008 01:23 PM

Antique Color TV stimulus package, eh? So this thread comes equipped with a few 5AR4s, a 15GP22 or two, and a bag of fresh can cap's? I'm in!

My favorite TV not in my collection is probably an original Chromacolor (forget the chassis) and also the RCA CTC-22 tabletops. Love the style of those.

In my collection, I'd have to say that the portacolor is among my favorites. Not for picture quality but for the fact that it's on its second crt, with all original tubes and still works really well. Of the later sets, the RCA ctc-121's are some of my favorites.

zenithfan1 11-07-2008 02:47 PM

LOL! nice one! I wish it did come with all that stuff! Especially the 15G! CTC-121s are really good sets, nice cabinet and sound systems too.

ihmeyers 11-07-2008 04:33 PM

I've got my '66 Admiral (purchased from Doug) looking really good now. I've got a couple of late 40 RCA's in storage that maybe I'll get out this weekend. I can't remember if they work. I originally purchased them from a great TV guy on L.I. named Vaughn that seems to have disappeared. He had a store in Hicksville that had a gazillion old TVs and radios.

I'm in a pretty stressful job but messing around with my TVs, while frustrating sometimes, is a great relaxer.

Dan Starnes 11-07-2008 05:09 PM

I still have to figure out why my Philco has lost HV. But that will wait till a blizzard weekend when I cant do anything outside. Besides, I misplaced my voltage tester somewhere in Fibber McGee's closet, and it is too dangerous to open the door.

I've been to his house! I was there with Bob Galanter {ohohyodafarted}. His Last name is Rudissil And his business name is oldtimetv, his house number is 17 but I forget the street number or name. He was really cool to talk to and yes, he has like a million tvs in his house to the point you cannot walk in there. I've emailed him a few times but he never responded. I know he's around though, he had some stuff on ebay a while back. Small world huh?

I have been to his house too! Many years ago, probably like 1995. He took me there to show me an old Dumont he had in his basement that he restored for me. His store was right next to a movie theatre in Hicksville. I bought all my TVs there save a Predicta I bought on ebay from Larry in Texas and the Admiral I bought from Doug. I grew up in NY and lived in Queens after I got married. Would go out to Vaughn about every few months or so just to see what was new. I bought my first vintage radios there too.

It really is a small world.

You guys know I'm crazy as a Shithouse Rat, but hear me out. In 2-3-500 years, the roundies & other old sets we save might be as valuable as rare cultural icons from a long-ago time. Imagine being the keeper of a CT-100 or a CTC-12 in 2525, to pick a year out of the air, & having said set still work...Or even a lowly bakelite Admiral 7" set from 1948, like I have...Or the 3" 1947 Pilot... Or will people care about stuff like that hundreds of years from now ? Will we be back to living in caves by then, w/only a few "Mad Monk" types keeping the flame of civilisation alive ?

It really gives ya something to think about.:scratch2: I wish I could see what happens that far in the future. I often wonder who will be the next caretaker of my collection, if it is lucky enough to get one after I'm gone. And Sandy G, There's nothin' wrong with being crazy as a shithouse rat, it makes the world more interesting and we wouldn't have you any other way!!:D:thmbsp:

HA! That's him alright and a character he is! Maybe I'll give him a call or something late at night. I'm quite the night owl myself. I work a floating shift between 1st and 2nd and sometimes I get insomnia from it:thumbsdn: Thanks for the pic! GEEEZ!! it really IS a small world!!!

The only problem I have with being THAT way is that most folks who ARE, too, won't admit it... I tend to Bask in the Glory of being Nuckin' Futz...

zenithfan1 11-07-2008 07:58 PM

I can safely say, I'm Nuckin' Futz myself!!! and damn proud of it!! We can bask in it together:yes:

You know, its entirely possible we ran into each other at Vaughn's years ago. He had a mustache when I knew him back then...

zenithfan1 11-07-2008 08:20 PM

Nope, I was only there once and it was in may of this year.
